Lets talk toilet

So I'm a lurker who is remodleling my master bathroom.  I would post pictures but I still can't figure that part out Smile.  Everything is almost done, however I need to pick out a toilet.  I don't know the first thing about picking one out.  I know I do not want to spend more then $200.  Any idea or recommendations would help.

Thanks a ton.

PS I've been taking pictures of the process so when its all done I might figure out how to PIP

Re: Lets talk toilet

  • Standard or elongated bowl/seat.

    Standard or comfort height.

I have three different Kohler thrones in my house.  I prefer the regular height. I rarely use the comfort height ones b/c they feel odd.

You want to measure from the wall to hole in the floor, as well.  Some have a longer space and you need to know so you get the correct fit.

Don't skimp on the wax ring.  My toilet leaked when I only had one attaching the toilet to the floor.  We put in two rings and have had no leakage problems.

  • I had my plumber pick.  He has his favorite that never has issues and installs correctly so I just asked him to show me a pic.  It was under $200 I believe.

We just talked toilets Smile Here's a link to the post a few days ago. More than you ever care to know about toilets I'm sure.

  • I saw that the other day.  My understand is that Toto toilets are $$$$.
  • what is comfort height?  I'm thinking that means a higher toilet.  I'm not super tall 5'6 5'7.
  • Comfort height is the taller one.  I'm 5'6" and I don't like it.

The Toto I ordered was $278 shipped from homeclick.com.  Over your budget, but not by much for as good as people say they are.

And I ordered one two weeks ago for $199. Did you read the thread? Fox wrote out the toilet buyers handbook in there.

My SO is 6'2" and his old apartment had a comfort height, which he adored and favors, but I'm not as tall. Even if I were, it's my understanding that comfort height is great for sitting there awhile, but terrible for getting out quickly. Not conducive to movement because of the angle, if you hear me.

LOL!  Nice I'll have to use that.

A couple more things.  As far as comfort height goes the woman should get to decide IMO because we have to sit on them much more than our husbands.  Smile  Go to a plumbing showroom and sit on each.  The difference is small (14" from floor to seat vs. 16") but some notice it more than others.  Comfort height is ideal for elderly or people with bad hip/knee joints.  It's standard in nursing homes and hospitals...and why you can buy those plastic seats that go over your standard height toilet.  I'm tall and this is our forever home so we went with comfort height.

I just wrote some wax ring advice on a DIY post above.  Make sure to get just the standard wax rings.  The ones with the horns can be hard to install correctly and lead to more problems than they are worth.  Our plumber suggested to use the standard ring and double up two of them if we needed an extra tall one (which we did because Toto's Unifit has a large area for the ring).  No issues with that so far.  Also wax rings are a one shot deal if you put the toilet on it and need to adjust it or take it back off get a new ring.  They cost $1 and are the most likely thing to fail so always go with a new one.
