Someone post this on the bump - Kaliah's story (vax/pertussis)
Re: Someone post this on the bump - Kaliah's story (vax/pertussis)
Yeah, it's a sad story. Don't read if you don't want to read about newborn babies going through lots of medical stuff due to pertussis. The story does not end on a happy note.
Horrible. Just awful.
That poor mom. The photos are what did me in.
Baby gets a cough at ten days old. Mom follows. They both test positive for pertussis. 3 weeks, and several surgeries later, the baby must be removed from life support. Moral of the story - get your vax, people, cause newborns are defenseless against pertussis. Lots of pictures of an adorable baby girl, followed by pics of said girl covered in IV tubing. Very, very sad. I just wondered if it would shake up the bump at all to see the reality behind not vaxing.
My Blog
I had it as a child. Around 10 or 11 I think. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.
Thanks for the synopsis, I thought it might be that.
As far as shaking up the anti-vaccers, I don't think it would. There would be cries of, "vaccine hysteria" and "it is rare for children to die."
And they have lots of drmomma posts to tout as "evidence" of the evils of vaccinations.
I want to crotch kick people.
The funny thing about all this broohaha is that I remember as a kid (I am 47) there being a girl in my hometown who was mentally challenged and even as far back as then her parents blamed it on vaccinations.
Fast forward to today. I haven't heard a story like that since in my hometown but everyone still remembers that girl. It is really hard for people to see the bigger picture when you can focus on a tragedy. I mean as simplistic as it sounds I always tell people that it sure looks like the odds are in favor of vaccinations using her as an example more so than against you.
Can anyone who read it tell me if it says whether the mom was nursing?
I will post it on my fb ( my friends lean heavily anti-vax) but I am not going to bother if baby wasn't nursing bc they will all say that baby would have had immunity if she had been nursing.
That is horrifying.
The baby was BFed and your friends are dumb.
textbook definition of missing the point
Oh give her a break. She is just saying she knows her stupid friends will irrationally dismiss the sad story on breastfeeding grounds if she posts it.
Thank you.
Why did I click that? It is seriously my worst nightmare.
That poor baby, and her poor parents.
That was a sad story, but I guess I'm reading it wrong b/c it doesn't seem aimed at anti-vaxers so much as at adults getting boosters for pertusis. I mean, the mom is the one who had the cough first (at delivery - exposed prior to giving birth) and likely passed to her newborn who was too young to get a vax. It wasn't b/c the mom wasn't vaccinated, it was b/c she was vaccinated so long ago and the exposed when the vax wasn't as effective.
I don't think it would sway any discussion about vax/delayed-vax/anti-vax, it's a sad story that all moms hope will never happen and could happen to anyone who hasn't had a pertusis booster before becoming a mom.
Are you united with the CCOKCs?
Sometimes babies are around people other than their moms, like unvaccinated children.
Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
What makes me mad about the whole anti/delayed vax crowd is that they think they can somehow put on their magic capes and avoid illness.
We are coming out of two week illness, not whopping cough or anything that is vaccine preventable, but a terrible, terrible cold. Like the worst ever. First the baby came down with it, then me, and then my husband. It involved fever, chills, hot flashes, coughing, sneezing, sniffling, headache, congestion, and fatigue. One night we had to take the baby to the ER because of her fever. And we have no idea where we picked it up!!! Or who gave it to us!!
So yeah, sickness is all around and I can't for the life of me understand why a parent wouldn't vaccinate against illness for those illnesses we can prevent!!!
And this article from the great aunt of Kaliah - shows that nobody told Kaliah's mom that she shouldn't bring a baby with pertusis to a birthday party with kids and wasn't ever informed of the whole issue. It's a public health issue that needs to be addressed in each community and is now a big issue and part of the public health information being disseminated in Kaliah's home state/county.

I guess I just don't understand being pissed at people who don't agree with you instead of educating and accepting that you can't change everyone.
Are you united with the CCOKCs?
If more people were vaxed, the likelihood of exposure, and then catching and passing along a disease, is much diminished. This is why herd immunity is so important.
Yes, I'm going to be pissed at people who don't agree because the facts are not on their side, and this is literally a life and death issue.
