It's Slow...

... Teach me how to curl my own hair.

I have pretty long-ish , straight, layered thick hair. I usually run the straightener through it the day I wash it and then throw it in a pony tail the next day.

I bought a curling iron (1-1/4 inch barrel) thinking I could curl it in between the straight hair and the pony tail to extend the length between washing.

Well, apparently, I do not know how to curl my own hair. I blame my sister. She went to cosmetology school and still does my hair/makeup for special occasions.

Tips, please! I'm just talking big loose curls, not like Shirley Temple curls. Like this:

Re: It's Slow...

  • I couldn't help you - I don't straighten my hair :( Plus I have naturally curly hair.

It is boring and slow here today.

  • It is!

I used to perm my hair to have curly hair. The grass is always greener and all that.

I followed this cycle for years -

    short, cute bob
    grow out hair
    perm
back to short cute bob, when perm started to grow out

I'm attempting something new with this curling of my own hair. When I tried it yesterday morning it just looked like my head got attacked by a pack of hungry squirrels who thought I'd hidden peanuts all up in there or something.

  • I wish I had tips, but my hair is short (chin length in the front and short int he back - I guess it's an inverted bob?) and very fine.

My hair was past my shoulders a long time ago (about 15 years ago).  I could get it to curl, but as soon as I stepped outside it went flat.

I wonder if maybe you're wrapping your hair too tightly around the barrel?  Are you using any styling product?

  • I want someone to teach me too! *follows thread*

  • I like having my hair in a bob. It's so simple!

No, I don't use any product in my hair (sometimes some hairspray on my bangs). Should I be?

My sister (the hairdresser) bought me root booster and smoothing cream for Christmas. I also have hair spray and dry shampoo.

  • Since my hair is so fine and thin, I have to use product.  I use this styling cream to get volume (maybe the size of a marble - a little goes a long way):

    image

Then I blowdry my hair upside down to get the lift/volume.  Finally I take a big round brush (1.5 - 2 in barrel) to smooth out the lift and give it some bend.  So it's kind of like this (but I back comb mine more to get lift at the crown, but this is basically my length):

I think practicing with styling products and tools you'll be able to figure it out.  It took me a while (and a good stylist) to find the right cut for my hair type and to find something that was easy to maintain.

  • I would say try some mousse to get it to hold? I am not much help, but I will say that the squirrel imagery made me laugh, so thank you for that!

    I aim to please!

I'm going to see if my sister will come over and teach me. But normally she just sighs and says "Give me that!" and does it for me. Ha.

She's my little sister too. She got all the style know-how.

Cute! I had my hair like that in high school. Then I went to a longer bob. Then I started the grow out/perm/cut cycle. I'm this close to another perm - it makes long hair so much easier.

  • I usually just take fairly small sections and wrap it around the outside (no clamping) of the curling iron pretty quickly and then let it fall off so it's super wavy/barely curly.
  • I look like a totally different person when my hair is straightened.

  • My hair has always had an issue with curling. it's bone straight, thin and oily so even when i do curl it, it only lasts maybe an hour before it falls out so I dont even bother trying anymore. Sad Sorry I cant help

Oooh! This might help my problem. The clamp part was giving me weird jaggedy looking bumps in my curls.

  • why is it that celebrities hair are always perfect

  • Because they have a shiitload of money for their own stylist.

Word. I always told my sister that if I got famous she would travel around with me and do my hair and makeup for everything! (And then she'd eventually get "discovered" because she is tall and gorgeous!)

I'd probably also see how much it would be to hire my eye-brow threader to hop onto a plane and come and do my eyebrows because anytime I let anyone but her touch them I end up looking like a freak!

    damn people lol

  • I do the same as Pickle. I never clamp it under, cause it gets that stupid flat mark at the end. I usually use a leave in conditioner and shine serum before I dry my hair, and after I curl it I'll flip my head upside down, do a quick hair spray all over, and voila.

I do wish I were a celebrity and could pay to get that stuff done professionally... if only because it feels way better to have someone else do that stuffs! Lol.

  • I curl mine fairly often. I have really thick hair, so I use mousse to give my hair some texture. I have a curling iron with and without a clamp, but prefer the clamped one.

Don't close the clamp all the way. That's how you get the kinks.

  • Yeah, I am afro-tastic and I love it!!!

Have you tried that Wen product or those shells that they advertise late night?

  • 1. Wash hair.

    2. Use a liberal amount of mosee in your hair. Tresseme makes good stuff for heat.

    3. Blow dry hair. I used to use a round brush to give it some volume

    4. Heat up a curling iron

    5. Wrap hair GENTLY around the barrel, hold for 5-10 seconds let go. Move on to the next piece

    6. flip hair upside down, spray liberally with a hair spray  that won't make it harder than a rock.

OR invest in a good set of heated rollers. That's what I did for my wedding.
