Recent cooking fails, disappointments, etc

I tried the cover recipe from this month's Food & Wine, the Thai Chicken (was going to make it into tacos).

The marinade smelled and tasted awful. I promptly tossed it and we went to Chick-fil-A.

  • Mmmm... Chick-Fil-A....

I made a shrimp and barley risotto a few weeks ago that was nearly inedible.  We gave up on it and made nachos.

  • I made a slowcooker honey sesame chicken type thing and it was just way too soy sauce-heavy. I mean, we ate it, but I would just really cut down on it next time.

I also thought I might finally get DS to eat eggs last night (they are literally the one and only food he has shunned since the very beginning of eating solids). When he called the frittata I made "egg pizza" I thought for sure he'd try it. Nope, just picked all the egg off the potatoes, etc. and left a big pile of it on his plate. :P

  • I made a cinnamon brown sugar buttercream frosting and there was so much sugar in it that I thought my teeth would fall out right then.  But...it was kinda good.
Always be yourself. Unless you suck.

L has gutted every taco, quesadilla, and sandwich I have ever made her. She leaves the bread and tortilla on the plate (when I'm lucky... otherwise she flips it onto the floor).

Sometimes I think they gave me the wrong baby.

  • I tried to use up leftover ricotta for an italian cookie recipe. everything seemed ok, I baked it and it spread more than the image, and sticky, so I decided to turn it into a whoopie pie.

After the fact, I realized I DOUBLED the amount of sugar that I was supposed to add. it was way overly sweet when I bit into it.

  • I made a lemon and garlic Swai fish. I could not get over the gross mushy texture of the fish and into the trash it went. We ordered pizza instead.

Hah. Z would eat an entire loaf of bread and package of tortillas, if you let him.

  • I bought a beautiful filet of haddock and made a lovely meal around it. Found a bone and somehow it skeeved me out and I just couldn't touch the rest of the meal. I had a bowl of Cheerios instead!
  • I tried making Smitten Kitchen's Mushroom Bourguignon last Friday and it was a failure before I even started. I had frozen fresh mushrooms and when they thawed then were repulsive mush. I cried and then went to a diner for dinner.
  • I went to make a slow cooker chicken dish a few months ago.  The outlet somehow got tripped and it didn't cook.

Tristan is 3 and refuses and form of potato. No matter HOW I try to hide it and I try often. :( SO I understand.

I have done that. Only I turned it on and left and it was never plugged in. GO ME!

  • I made purple cow frozen yogurt (via Cook Like a Champion) and it tasted so good right after it was churned.  Problem is, I didn't realize I bought fat free Greek yogurt until I went to take the purple cow frozen yogurt out of the freezer for us to eat a couple of days later and it.was.rock.solid.  Ugh!

  • Yesterday I had a pork loin in an marinader with orange juice and spices. I did it on one side for 8 hours got showered and dressed for work. Pulled it out of the fridge and flipped it to the other side for 8 hours. I never sealed it right. I was covered in OJ Cumin and Coriander. GOOD TIMES!
  • I made these marbled red velvet cheesecake brownies a couple months ago, and even though I wasn't happy with how they turned out, I brought them to work, and my coworkers ate them because they'll eat anything.  Then I realized I doubled the sugar in the cheesecake layer, which at least explained the cloying sweetness.

Umm, I just did this last week with a roast.

    Anniversary

  • I made bbq brisket yesterday, but after I marinated it, I wondered why it had seemed so pink and liquidy. I grabbed the package out of the garbage, and it was corned beef. Oops! It ended up being a pizza night.

  • Tried to make a recipe someone sent me for Passover apple muffins.  They never turned into muffins - they exploded in the oven and what was left didn't hold together at all - it was more like apple mush.

Ugh...thank you.  MY DH made what I am assuming is the same recipe last week. He is a terrible cook, but I know there was no way he could have messed this up.  We didn't even eat it, which we NEVER do.  I feel less crazy now...
