Need help from healthy eaters!

So I've been working really hard on overhauling my eating habits the last month or so (AND I'VE LOST 12 LBS!!!!!!!!!!WOOOOOOHOOOOO)

I had so many bad eating habits.  One of the things I have cut WAY back on is eating out.  Now I eat out like once a week, twice tops.  The problem is I see all restaurant food as "equally evil" and probably could make better choices.  I'm going to start picking out what I want to eat before I go so I dont' make one of those last minute bad decisions.  I had lunch with a friend today and we had asian food.  I had the pad thai.  I'm sure I could've made a better choice (good news is though, that in the past I would have gotten the spring rolls too and I did not!  yay me!)

So... my date Saturday night is at a really nice Italian resturant.  What should I order?  I really want the Fried ravioli appetizer but I know I am going to skip that.  I was thinking about either:

Pan-Seared Sea Bass over seafood risotto in a white wine tomato artichoke sauce

or

Pollo Ala Gussi-  Fresh Chicken Breast with a White Wine Sauce, Mushrooms, Prosciutto and Mozzarella Cheese.

Leaning toward the first choice, but I feel like every time I eat risotto I eat like two bites and I get stuffed.  The second one though, the mozz cheese concerns me.

Thoughts on this and just making better choices eating out in general?

Re: Need help from healthy eaters!

  • I would do the chicken breast and hold the cheese and creamy sauces...

ETA: And as for eating out in general, I order vegetarian meals all the time and get veggies for sides. Portions are generally HUGE, so I share with the BF.

They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
  • Both of those sound yummy but at an Italina American resturant are probably loaded with fat, sodium, and calories ("sauce" will usually upt he calories majorly). I'd go for portion control and pick what you want but ask for a half size or only eat half of what they give you.

I eat healthy M-F and rarely eat out during the week.  On the weekends I eat and drink whatever I want but try and control my portions.  I have lost a lot of weight, and that is with eating crappy food every weekend for the last 2 years.

I vote that you eat whatever you want Saturday...if it is fried ravioli so be it.  You are on a date to hopefully have a good time and you dont need the added stress of worrying about what you are eating.  A person needs to have a cheat meal every once in a while, or in my case every weekend.  Honestly if I had to eat healthy for every meal 7 days a week I would go insane and never be able to maintain it.

  • I eat really healthy and eat out almost all the time, or convenience foods.

I would probably have the sea bass over risotto, but I'm sure its not exactly low-cal! I don't think eating healthy means eating a strict low-everything diet. For me, it means eating real foods, eating in moderation, etc.

So eat half of it, take the rest home. Have lighter foods earlier and the next day.

BK, if you eat healthy 99% of the time, one "unhealthy" meal won't kill you. Eat healthy tomorrow, for your other meals tomorrow and on Sunday. Get whatever you want for your date and just watch your portion size.

    I second this.

GO for either option, but watch your portions. Sodium and added fats will usually be a factor no matter what you order when eating out. Get the fried raviloi, but don't eat them all or even half. Have a few and call it good. Leading up to dinner, maybe go for a walk/run in the AM and be strict on what you eat for breakfast/lunch/snacks...then just enjoy dinner! :)

I agree with JM.  Eat as healthy as you can during the week and try not to eat out during that time.  Just make sure when you're cheating, you don't go too overboard.  Have what you want, but keep your portion sizes in check.  And since it's a little harder for us gals, maybe only do one cheat day a week.

ETA:  Congrats on the weight loss!  Keep up the good work!

  • I eat clean, mostly organic foods all week, I prepare my own breakfast and lunch for work and eat 5 small meals a day and usually only dine or order out on weekends  But on the weekends I let myself splurge on food and alcohol. I would agree with PP to order what you want and just take some home. Sometimes if they put the plate down and the portion is huge I'll ask right away for another plate, cut it in half and ask them to wrap it up so I won't be tempted to over eat. I figure what do I work out 7 days a week for if I can ever indulge?? I try to stick with the 80% rule and eat well 80% of the time. But you only live once as I don't want to be that annoying person in the restaurant asking them to make my food with cooking spray instead of butter ya know?

This X 1000.  So annoying to take a woman out for dinner and she is sipping water, orders a salad, and eats maybe half of it.  Meanwhile I wolfing down beers, garlic bread, and a steak bigger than my head.  So she is talking while observing me stuff my face.

LOL, it's a catch 22 right?  Guys want a girl with a hot bod, but want her to eat too!  Trust me, I wish it were possible!  Thanks for the advice... I've thought about the whole "wrap up half of it right away"... that's what my trainer recommends too.  But would that be weird to do on a date?  And I stopped drinking too... not for weight loss reasons, I've just been doing too much of it lately.  So all I drink is water.  I love water.  Is that a turn off too?  lol

Yes. Don't wrap up half right away. that would be weird, IMO.

And lol at the no drinking being a turnoff...coming from my conversation earlier in the week. :)

  • eat what you want, eat half, and order a salad to help fill you up

Eat healthy during the week, and maybe excercise on Saturday, so you've already done the most to keep yourself healthy.  Also, keep your breakfast and lunch healthy but filling (lots of fruit, veggies, etc.) before your date.

When I go out to eat, I order what I want.  What I limit is the extras - - I'll have an appetizer OR dessert OR a 2nd glass of wine.  LOL - I'll have the 2nd glass of wine anyway if I split an app. or dessert with DH, so that's 1 1/2 "extras." vs.

  • Yeah when I mentioned wrapping up half I was forgetting we were talking about a date here. Definitely don't do it tonight, I was just speaking in general terms. Of course even that strategy sometimes backfires on me when I have drinks after dinner, then go home and drunkenly eat the stupid leftovers anyway! Just eat and enjoy yourself, if not the date at least the food :)

There is HUGE difference between a woman who watches.her.every.calorie and one eats healthy 99% of the time but every once in a while says fvckk it and is able to cut loose per se and eat like she wants to. Both of these women can have nice bodies as long as you eat in moderation and exercise.
