Bathroom fan plus light question

We are going to add a bathroom fan soon, and I like the kind with a light as we need more lighting in the room.  We already have vanity lighting.  I hate to have 2 more light switches added.  Would it be crazy to have the fan/ light combo connected to one switch?  You'd then have the light and fan on together with no option of only turning one on.  However again, I have the vanity lighting separate.  Thoughts?

Re: Bathroom fan plus light question

  • I would be annoyed to have the fan and light on a single switch.

I'm used to 3 switches in the bathroom (vanity light, overhead light, and fan).  Both our bathrooms are set up that way.

  • I think it depends how sensitive you are to the sound. I have vanity lighting, a fan/light combo, and lighting in the shower- 3 switches.  I only use the fan/light when I need the fan. For some reason the sound of the fan drives me batty, so if I regularly needed the extra light, I would recommend an extra switch

I think it depends on what fan. If it's a whisperlite then I have no problems with that. In fact I have the exact same set up in the world's tiniest power room - one switch, vanity light and overhead fan come on at the same time. A low quality fan that sounds like a boat motor? Then I would probably do separate switches.
