We are buying our first home in two weeks, and the whole place is lath and plaster for the walls. What is the safest way to hang things on lath and plaster walls?

Re: Lath and plaster
We use anchors for heavier things, small nails for light. DH pre drills the holes over a piece of painters tape to prevent the plaster from cracking. I haven't hun anything since hearing this, but the guy at home depot said if you use a lighter and heat up the nail before nailing it in it will slide in super smooth.

We had that in our last home and Hercules Hooks worked awesome! I found that anchors sometimes cracked the walls but the hooks just left a small hole and that was it.
3M has picture hangars now w/ the clean removing tape stuff. I'm thinking of doing that rather than risking cracks.
Does it happen to have a picture rail hanging?
