Getting my ill dog to eat...

So, Debbie is starting to show some anorexia with her illness (Leukemia).  She is acting fine otherwise, but if we can't get her to eat, things will go down hill fast.  She is currently eating about 1.5 cups of dry food and 6oz of wet food.  We also add pumpkin to get peak her interest. Yogurt is not attracting her at all.

I am considering buying cat food (since it is super stinky) to get her to eat.  Any other ideas?

eta: she just happily gobbled up a piece of sweet and sour chicken (sans sauce).  So, maybe I'll boil chicken and shred it for her.

  • sometimes garlic powder works for our dog

i squeeze a fish oil capsule on her breakfast - it's good for them too.

kaya eats raw food and always loves the juices that thaw with the meats so you could pour that on her food - assuming you aren't vegetarians and have meat juices lying around.

kaya likes the liquid out of the tuna can before we make tuna sandwhichs.

    random ideas I guess.
    Sorry and good luck!

  • FIL says dogs' taste buds respond to savory. He says it is a taste like sweet, sour, bitter, etc. Whatever, FIL.

But, there may be truth. I was going to suggest warming her food a bit to bring out the scent. Or mix a bit of wet food into her kibble to make it more appetizing.  Maybe drop a bite of (safe for dogs) people food into her kibble to get the eating started. When I buy a whole chicken, I cook up the giblets for the dog...so stinky but she's snarfs those.

How is her tummy? If it is sensitive, definitely boiled chicken. My dog hates rice, but absolutely lovvvvves plain unflavored oatmeal. I add extra water when I fear she's dehydrated.

ETA. If she ate that bit of chicken, then definitely anything with a lot of scent. That might make her gobble.

ETA again...my dog responds when I'm cooking dairy, especially home made whipped cream. So what about cottage cheese? Limit it a bit since it has sodium, but the protein might help the dog feel better.  I'm stuck on people food, because it's a special treat and always eaten quickly in my house even with tummy troubles (hence the liquidy oatmeal).

  • Do you live near a specialty pet store that sells frozen bags of fresh, unprocessed tripe?

I've ordered from here and shipping is extremely fast.  It comes packed in a cooler like shipping container and is so good for them.

The chicken feet are crowd pleasers, too.

    In the meantime, tuna.

    Best of luck!!!!

  • Chicken broth should do the trick.

Get some cheap chicken parts, tie them up in cheesecloth and then cover with water. Simmer for about an hour.

The meat from the chicken is good for doggies, too.:)

Cottage cheese, sweet potatoes (cooked) and canned pumpkin (not the pie mix) are also loved by dogguses.:)

  • Chicken or turkey baby food is my go to for sick animals.
    .
  • I'd add some chicken broth and see if that helps, or maybe mix in some shredded chicken.  I'm not sure how long she has, but I have to say, in the last weeks of my dog's life, she got whatever she wanted.  It might not be the suggested method, but we knew she was going and fast and it was far more important to us that she eat and be happy.  We made special trips to KFC for her :)
