Cancun recommendations?

DH and I are going kid-free for 6 nights. What are some MUST dos? I'd love to go to Chichen Itza but it looks like a long drive for me. Would you go anyway? Any restaurant recommendations? We'll be staying in the Royal Resorts.

The first year we went we went to Chitchen Itza, and we thought it was amazing!~  It did take 2/3 of a day, but well worth it in my opinion, at least if you are a history buff/  The second time we went, we went to Tulum, which was closer.  In fact, we did a 1/2 day at Tulum and a 1/2 day playing and snorkeling at XEl-ha.  This place was AMAZING!  Great, easy snorkeling, tubing, zip lining and much more.  I lived that day! One excursion day was enough for me though in one week.  The rest of the days I just wanted to continuously move from the pool to the beach.

We did Chichen Itza two years ago on a private tour coordinated through our hotel concierge (aka - under the table but it was very safe) and it was awesome!   After Chichen Itza, he took us a touristy lunch that had dancers and awesome food and to two Cenotes which were amazing and then through the town of Valladolid which we loved.  It was a long day but well worth it.

My favorite restaurant is LaMadonna in La Isla shopping plaza.  It's Swiss/Italian food (Italian with lots of cream sauces) and has a martini bar. It's a little pricey but worth it.  The atmosphere is so cool.

dh and i own weeks at the islander (and have stayed at all of the royals) and have been every december for the last 10 years. the tomas more travel desks in the lobby are fantastic and offera  TON of trips. imo-CI is worth the ride.

We have been to Chichen Itza and would say its a definite must see even though its a full day. Ours included a swim in a cenote, lunch at a mexican restaurant so it made the day extra fun.

 Tulum is gorgeous and can be done in half a day (has one of the top 10 beaches in the world)

Coba is absolutely amazing, you can actually climb Coba

We swam with dolphins which wasnt the most exciting thing ever but was fun for the experience and to say we did it.

We have also been to Xcaret, its a full day outing but has so much to see, marine life, beaches, an amazing cenote to swim through, an out of this world lunch buffet, historical architecture, local animals and flowers and an awesome 2 hr show at the end of the night highlighting mexico's history. I say this is a must see, even though its a little pricey its good bang for your buck.

We booked through our resort for these excursions, however a friend used http://www.yucatreks.com/othertours.htm too book their excursions and never had a problem.
