I think Pel's allergic to chicken

We feed Blue Wilderness and had been alternating between salmon & duck protein because those two were what the pet store carried. I started ordering from Pet Food Direct, and they only carry salmon and chicken, so I bought a bag of chicken this month.

Since we started feeding the chicken, his skins been itchy & awful and now he's developed horrible diarrhea. He woke us up to go out twice last night and had an accident in the house while we were at work. Poor guy, he's otherwise fine and not off his food at all and acting normally. He hasn't gotten into anything unusual otherwise, so I'm pretty sure his food is the culprit.

I'm keeping him full of water and I think he's going to be fasting tomorrow morning and getting some cooked lamb and rice later in the day.

I feel like a bad mom for giving it to him, though I know there's no way I could have known.

Re: I think Pel's allergic to chicken

  • My dog's allergic to chicken so we just don't give it to him.  His skin just breaks out so nothing as bad as what you're experiencing, but we avoiding any kind of birds.  It took us 6 months of changing his diet and trying different things to finally figure out why his skin just randomly started breaking out lol.
  • I think all of the Wilderness formulas contain chicken so my guess is that it's something else. I'd compare the ingredients and see if anything else is different.

  • My dog is also allergic to chicken. He breaks out in bleeding sores, scratches himself raw, his UTI condition acts up, and he's generally just a mess. The best food I've found for him is the Nature's Domain brand at Costco. It's a salmon/sweet potato grain-free formula, and it's made by Taste of the Wild. The formula is nearly identical to TOTW but it's much less, $33 for a 35lb bag.

You're right. There's no turkey in the Salmon version, which is what he does best on. We'll switch back to that and see if it helps.

  • Both my parents' dog and my dog don't have an allergy to chicken, but we noticed that they were considerably calmer and jumped a lot less when we switched them to lamb and rice based food. I've heard this from other dog owners as well...perhaps chicken just doesn't sit great with dogs in the first place.
