DH and I are going to a race track in the Dallas area for the Kentucky Derby. The ladies dress up the same as at the real derby. Anyone want to help me find a dress? My favorite color is pink. Thinking something floral. And it's pretty warm around that time here, what do the guys wear? Polo and khaki's okay maybe?
Re: Derby Dress
I agree with PP about Lily Pulitzer. Those style of dresses are all over Louisville right now and in high demand. Derby looks came out the day after St. Pat's Day. You may also want to look at Vineyard Vines for inspiration since they have a collection for the race and the numerous events that start well before the race itself. I keep seeing dresses like this and this in area department stores. Stick with natural fabrics and stay away from polyester since it does not breathe. The florals this year are showing up in the older women's departments in the stores. I really liked the Badgley Mischka hats I was seeing in Macy's and Dillard's. Nordstrom also had this one or this one for less. This hat and dress from VV could be great too. The hat from VV would be as simple as I'd go for a hat. I would not attempt to make a Derby hat yourself beacuse it will not look nearly as good since flowers on the brims aren't as prevalent anymore. Most hat designs center around very structured netting pieces or feathers at the moment.
Also, the attitude of Derby goers is that there is no such thing as too much when it comes to accessories. Google for Derby Fashion Shows if you need more inspiration, but keep in mind that many of those looks are for charity events (balls, cocktail parties, luncheons, and fashion shows) in the area as opposed to the race. It's 2 weeks of Derby Season leading up to the race with events every day/evening and around the clock on weekends.
Men in the infield are typically in navy blazers with light cotton shirts and khakis, khaki suits, or seersucker suits. Shorts or khakis and a polo without something over the polo would be considered underdressed for men in the stands. A cotton sweater or vest can be substituted for a jacket, but that's usually in the case of them having a more casual event before or after the race and no time to change. Men will also be sporting all colors of dress shoes and straw fedora type hats since they don't allow umbrellas in the stands to protect from sun and rain.

I also agree with pp about getting a derby hat from VV. They are great, I would also check out this one as well:

You can never go wrong with a monogram:)
I was just at the Santa Anita Derby last week, and attended the Preakness last year - so I consider myself qualified to advise on racing fashion. :-) A polo would be a little casual for a man - a sports coat would be a better choice.
For yourself, you would definitely want a fabulous hat. I'm also seeing more and more fascinators worn at races, probably because of Duchess Kate's influence.
