fruit trees

DH and I are going out tomorrow to pick up a couple more fruit trees.  We already have a dwarf orange, boysenberry bush, and pomegranate.  I definitely want a lemon tree.

What else do you recommend?

Re: fruit trees

  • I can't recommend anything from experience but my DH and I are hoping to pick up a peach tree and a dwarf lime tree soon.
  • We have a mini nectarine tree :) it has pretty pink blossoms.  It's our first year with it so I dont know how much fruit it'll produce.  It should grow to about 5 feet.
  • We have a pink lady apple tree that has been bearing fruit like crazy for such a young tree. I'd love to grab another avocado tree (our current one is little & won't be bearing anything for a while) and at least a lemon tree. I think we're also going to do seedless flame grapes.

How much space?  Are you looking only for trees or for other fruits too?

We get enough chill hours in NorCal for things like apples, cherries and peaches, but I suspect you won't.  Even I only have a handful of peach variety choices.  Any kind of citrus will probably do well for you (grapefruit, lime, etc.).  I think there are a couple of pear varieties you could get away with.  I just put in a goji berry and a bunch of southern highbush blueberries, which I believe will work in SoCal too, though if you have soil like ours, you'll need to amend to up the acid.  My raspberry plant in a big pot also produces like crazy, and we have pretty good luck with strawberries if I can remember to keep the watered.

One thing that I've planted that I'm super excited about is kiwi.  I have a colder-climate variety, and my Sunset book says the fuzzy, SoCal variety can take up to 5 years to produce, but if you have some vertical space you'd like to take advantage of, that might work for you.

  • We have quite a bit of space in our yard, as the previous owners didn't plant much of anything - except icky ice plants!  So we ripped it all out and started fresh.

We ended up picking up quite a few trees today:  a lemon, lime, nectarine, peach, apricot, and plum!  I'm excited to see what our yard looks like in a few years!

  • I hate you for getting to grow pomegranates. Our neighbors grew them in my hometown and I swear they got the size of footballs. And so, so juicy. Mmmm.

I thought you needed a chill for citrus?  If you want one more I'd do a kumquat. They're usually dwarf so you can grow it in a container if you want.

I can't wait until our pomegranate starts to produce fruit too!

We actually live just a couple miles from a bunch of Sunkist orchards, so citrus is definitely where it's at out here!

  • Oh, yeah, I always forget how Orange County got its name. My dad remembers when it was still mostly groves. Not that you're in Orange County, but it should have given me a clue.

Not a tree, but don't artichokes grow wonderfully down there too? ::seething jealousy::

Yes, my uncle gets the most amazing artichokes, but we can't find a plant anywhere!

I had a student go up north to Castroville last week and they ate at the artichoke restaurant - google it for a pic if you haven't seen it!
