We are planning to redo the kitchen this summer and have been talking about different ideas. One includes exposing the brick wall that runs along the longest wall of the kitchen and refinishing it. At this point we don't know if it is a true option since we don't know the condition of the brick yet. We exposed a 1X1 ft section that is hidden behind the fridge and it looks okay but we would want to see the whole wall before making a final decisions. The brick is red with gray mortal, it is a firewall between condo units. The mortaring looks a bit slap-dash since the wall was interior and not expected to be seen. We would consider painting the brick but our first choice would be to not paint it.
I am concerned that the brick will be difficult to keep clean. Does anyone have any experience with that? We would run a short backsplash up behind the counter of a solid-surface material that would be easier to clean
The wall would have the fridge, a long run of cabinets and a sink. We are aware that there will likely have to be a false wall for some plumbing.
The building is about 120 yrs old and we decorate in a mix of styles, some contemporary but respecting the old bones. We will keep the floor as it is now, which is a reddish/orange/tan color of quartersawn heart pine.
We have been here for several years and plan to live here indefinitely, so we want to decorate to suit ourselves and not necessarily future buyers. However I don't want something that would turn off the majority of buyers.
Re: Thoughts on exposed brick in kitchen?
I exposed the brick chimney in our kitchen. I love the way it turned out. It was quite a bit of work though, and that was a relatively small area. I found that a chisel and hammer worked as well as anything else. For stubborn areas, sometimes wetting it helped. After I removed the plaster, I polyurethaned the brick to make clean-up easier. I did not put up a backsplash. My contractor contoured the back edge of the countertop to match the contours of the brick.
This. If its paired with the right cabinates and appliences, it will look awesome!

I think it would be awesome and give a lot of warmth to your kitchen! I wouldn't worry about keeping it clean other than what the previous poster said about vacuuming/wiping down. I've seen it in so many restaurants and it never looks bad.
I hope it works out! Be sure to post pics if you do go with it!
I was thinking no until I saw this pic -- gorgeous!! I love the stainless backsplash behind the stove. It seems like that would help a lot with cleanliness.
