Paleo runners -- how do you fuel?

I think I need carbs to run effectively.  Here's the deal: I don't eat paleo (I'm a pescetarian), but it was Passover this week.  During Passover, I can't eat any grains except matzah.

Anyway, I do three short midweek runs and a long run on Saturday, and I noticed that my runs were much, much harder this week.  The short runs were on par with my usual speed, but they were just tougher, as though my legs had no juice.  My long run this morning (9 miles) was lousy.  I put in the miles, but I was a little slower than usual and it was just effing hard.

So paleo ladies who run: what do you eat?  How do you fuel your body effectively?  Passover ends tonight, but it comes every year!  Thanks!

Re: Paleo runners -- how do you fuel?

  • Veggies with starch in them naturally, like broccoli or yams, and fruits like banana are usually what coaches suggest. Also red quinoa and coconut pancakes are an option. You can make pancakes etc that would normally use flour out of almond flour. I think the concensus though, for runners who run long distance, is that paleo might not 100% meet those needs. That's where their 90% paleo and 10% cheat comes in. You would need to use your 10% cheat on oatmeal or something to fuel a run.
