Extra long curtain rods

I have a question about extra long curtain rods. I have a set of four side-by-side windows that span the back wall of our living room. In total, the windows measure 13 feet across. DH wants curtains, so I am trying to find curtain rods that will fit but can't find what I am looking for. I want something in polished nickel. I love the oversized metal rod from West Elm ( http://www.westelm.com/products/oversized-metal-rod-b885/?pkey=cwindow-hardware), but it only goes up to 120 inches wide. So, I have a few questions:

1) Can I just use 2 of the WE rods, or would that look weird to have 2 curtain rods side by side over my windows?

2) If your answer to #1 is "heck yes that is fugly", then do you have any good suggestions for what I should do? Any recs on where to purchase custom/extra-long curtain rods? I would rather purchase in person than online, but I am open to either one (I am in the Atlanta area if that helps for local recs).

Oh, and the curtains will rarely if ever be closed. He just wants them for the "look". And the couch is up against the windows as well.

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Re: Extra long curtain rods

  • You won't find any curtain rods that are 13 ft.  Just use multiple of whatever size you can find and mount them close together so they look like they're one long run.  You'd put the brackets and rods up normally, you just wouldn't put the finials on the ends where you're trying to fake it and have the ends touch.

ETA, since you said they're just for looks, skip the rods since that'll be the expensive route and use cup hooks like this from our first house.

  • What about running the curtains on a cable system instead of rods?  IKEA has a system where you can go around a complete room, corners and everything.
  • How about just a short rod of each end to hold the short decorative end curtain.  I'll see if I can find a pic. Ive seen it done and it looks good. Better than a 13' spam of empty rod.
  • For a modern industrial look, a pipe, like a plumbing metal pipe, might work with pull-across curtains

We built our own curtain rod for our 12' span. We first tried plumbing pipe, but the diameter is too thick to allow curtains to slide across. Our solution was two closet rods that we connected (not sure of the details - DH did all this).

  • What a cool idea! I will definitely check into that.
  • You might want to consider making your own pipe rod with pipe from your local hardward store. You can spray paint it any color that goes with your decor if you do not like the color of the metal.   A VERY inexpensive alternative.
  • <Hi, I'm new here. :)>

Our living room window is 12' wide. I hung the curtain rods about 13' wide. I wanted a double curtain rod for ours (so I could have sheers & curtains) and I ended up going with the Cambria rods at BB&B (I think you can get them other places as well.) They also come in singles. I just used the ends that come with the rods for a more modern look, instead of buying any other finials.

We bought two of the 48-88'' rods and then we used just one bracket in the middle, using the double sided screw that's used for the decorative end to screw the two rods together. I hope that makes sense.

I was worried they wouldn't work because you're supposed to use more brackets for support than just 3 for such a large window but over a year later they still look great.

  • Thanks ladies for all of your suggestions. I think I am going to try a few of these ideas to see what works the best. I appreciate your help!
  • We have the Ikea cable system for a 16' span.  We love it and it hasn't lost any tension in the five or so years we've had it.
