Can I do anything about this? HELP!

I have new neighbors across the street. They park their car in their driveway. I think like 4 20-ish aged people live there and an old woman. People are constantly coming and going and it's a bit shady. There must be a short in it or a problem with it because I think at least once an hour, the car alarm starts going off. For no apparent reason to me. It just starts sirening. Usually within 3-5 minutes, they come out and turn it off. It is SO annoying though! It goes on all day and all night long.

Is there anything I can do about this? I really don't want to march over and ask them about it and be "that neighbor". They don't seem like the type of people that would be nice to me about it. Could this be a noise complaint with the city?  Sorry if this seems dumb but it really is so annoying to be woken up to!

Re: Can I do anything about this? HELP!

  • Do you have an HOA? That can help a lot in situations like these!

I'd probably call the cops and play dumb, like "It's been going off x amount of times for the past few hours and I'm really worried that there's something wrong at the house" Maybe if the cops came out and visited they'd get a clue.

  • Do you have a HOA?  If so I'd lodge a complaint there first, then with the city, and send an anonymous letter each time it happens, and cc the neighbor.

Trust me, the city gets tired of getting complaints about the same people over and over.

  • No HOA.. not quite that fancy here. Haha I wish though! But that's a good idea about "playing dumb" and being worried. And then I guess I could just continue to complain.

  • I'd play the concerned neighbor and go over, introduce yourself, ask if everything is ok with their car and see if they need help. I did this with a neighbor whose smoke alarm would go off daily (from cooking or something like that). I went over to ask if they were ok since their alarm was going off and thereafter the issue stopped. I think they finally realized that the alarm was a concern to others as well.
  • There is nothing wrong with approaching them about the problem in a nice way.  IF they do not respond - then, yes, this is a noise compaint.  First try dealing directly with them, then take the complaint with the city route.
  • I'd just approach them about it nicely and then go from there. We have people renting across from us (okay, in every direction) but they would park behind our driveway, which was a hill. In the summer (before we got our Equinox), it was fine because there was no worry, but in the winter, we had a hard time getting up the driveway and our cars would slide down when we were trying to back out. We just explained it and asked if they could avoid parking right behind our driveway and they did.

  • I'd put a nice note on the car and not sign it.
