Newbie with a question - dog foot pad

I was hoping I can get some advice.  My dog tore her pad on the bottom of her paw basically off.  It's not bleeding but she doesn't want to walk on it.  What can I do?  Do I call the emergency vet or is there something I can do until tomorrow?

Thank you for any help!  I feel so bad for my girl Crying

Re: Newbie with a question - dog foot pad

  • If she tore the pad off and it is not bleeding all a vet will do is bandage her foot and put her on pain meds and antibiotics. If you feel comfortable waiting a day to go to the vet (and I understand, emergency vet bills are crazy!) you can put a sock over her foot, cut the toes off of the sock and slid it over her foot. Attach the sock with athletic tape or something similar then make an appointment in the morning. I would equate the feeling your dog is experiencing to having a huge blister on the bottom of your foot rupture. Not the best feeling but painful to walk on.

  • My dogs burned the pads of their paws off. It was painful for them, but we did not go to the e-vet Sunday, as we did not see what had happened until late that night, but did take them in as soon as we could during regular hours (less than 24 hours). In the meantime, we soaked their feet in cool water, carefully dried them, and put socks on their paws with tape, as suggested above. The vet trimmed all the hair on their paws, slathered them in burn cream (a silver based cream) and wrapped them tightly with gauze and tape.

After a week, we took their bandages off, the vet had us reapply the burn cream and bandages, changing daily.

I would PROBABLY wait until tomorrow--but you now your dog.

I'd do like a PP said and clean the wound, apply antibiotic ointment (or, better, bag-balm if you have it), and tape on a sock-bandage.
