Would an 8x10 area rug look horrible?

Our LR isn't huge. Right now our rug is 5x7 and the fronts of the legs of the sectional are on top of the rug. We have HW floors and I was considering getting an 8x10 area rug to give my kids (and new baby which will be crawling) a little more area with some cushion. I always feel bad when they pull out their blankets and lay on the hardwood floors to watch movies. Thoughts? Would it just look bizarre to have such a large rug? FWIW the room isn't huge either - maybe 14x18?

  • Our LR is about that size and we have a 9x12' area rug.  It pretty much covers the area from in front of the couch to the front of the TV table.  There's only a foot or so of exposed hardwood around the edges of the room.  I like it, I think it looks great!

  • I don't think my living room is that large (close to it though). We have a 9x12. I have a couch and love seat on either end and a chair's front legs sitting on it. I like having furniture legs resting on the rug. So- no, I don't think it will look horrible.
  • Nope - I actually wonder if it would look too small.

I agree. I think area rugs should be anchored under furniture anyways. Like these:

  • an 8x10 would be fine in a room that size.  I'd rather see a large rug with furniture on it than the tiny 5x7 that sits under only the coffee table.  That's a huge pet peeve of mine.
