Phew! Mulching is hard work!

This weekend, DH and I mulched for the first time ever. We bought our house late last summer so this was our first adventure into gardening and maintenance as homeowners.

We ordered 5 yards of mulch and had it dumped in the driveway (on a lovely blue tarp of course) and we had to haul it around the yard with our John Deere and trailer. It took us about 8 hours spread across two days to get it all done. Holy crap that's a lot of work!

Thank goodness we don't need to do it again until next year.

Re: Phew! Mulching is hard work!

  • Yes it is hard work!  We're currently an 8 yard garden and growing.  We always pay a little extra to get cedar mulch so it lasts longer.  With a nice +3" of that mulch we can go 2-3 years before having to re-mulch the area but each year we go without there is more weeded needed of course.

Having the riding lawn mower with trailer is nice but I usually prefer moving it with a hand wheelbarrow instead because it's much easier to dump.

  • We get 10 yards and it all has to be hand carried down our hill. We usually spend two full days (about 16-20 hours) and we hire helpers. It blows! But we burn a lot of calories and I can eat a lot that weekend without feeling too guilty. I know once we complete our entire garden it will take about 20 yards. Good times :)

    Whoa, yikes! That's a lot!

The trailer was actually fairly easy to dump since the back just came off, thank goodness. The first two beds we did by shoveling out of the trailer. It took forever. I'm glad we finally realized that part!
