what's considered an average 5 k time?

Re: what's considered an average 5 k time?

  • Average for winners or average for Joe-Smoe's like me? I can tell you, the 5K that I ran this past weekend, there were about 470 runners and my time of 32:45 put me in 208th place. My BF who ran it in 27:19 finished 101st. The winner of the race came in at 16:22 and the fastest female was 22:49.
    Ridley Run 3.1 - 4/9/11 - 34:24 - 1st race evah!
    Kelly Monaghan's 5K - 5/15/11 - 3rd Place in AG
    Walk the Talk 5K - 5/18/11 - 31:12 PR
    Ridley Run 3.1 - 4/14/12 - 1st race of the year, 32:45
  • Age? Sex? Condition?  I don't think there is an "average."  Are you trying to compare your time?

I can run a comfortable 5k in roughly 25 min, 28yo female, if that counts, ha.

Chicago Half Marathon 9/11/11: 1:58:11 (PR)
Race for the Cure 10k, Chicago 9/24/11: 51:52 (PR)
ING New York City Marathon 11/6/11: 4:13:16 (PR)
  • Not sure what avg is, but I got my best time ever yesterday- 26:31!  I was so happy.

  • Honestly, there's no such think as an "average" 5k time.  There are too many factors at play-age and/or fitness level of the runner, the weather, the course, number of entrants, etc.  What is average for one person is not usually average for the next.
  • Yeah, it'll vary a lot, with the factors people listed above and also with the race, and what kind of participants it draws.

My best is a 26:25.  My first one was 32:something.

  • You can use this tool to calculate what average is for your gender/age: http://www.heartbreakhill.org/age_graded.htm

For me, a 30yo female, average (50th percentile) would be 28:47.

ETA: I'm pretty sure this is overall for 5Ks, not just for that 5K. Either way, it should be in the same ballpark.

    2010 Race PRs:

    5K - 24:57 10M - 1:28:20 13.1M - 1:57:29 26.2M - 4:28:29

  • I bet "average" in the sense of 1/2 below 1/2 above would be 30 minutes, but there are so many factors in play

  • My first 5K time was around 35:00. I ran the whole time, but barely. I was running REALLY slowly the 2nd half. I strongly dislike running, but I force myself to try to get better :)
  • My first 2 were 35 something and 33 something.
  • My friends and I ran one, and most of us never trained.  The guys finished in about 30 minutes, and most of the ladies finished in about 45 minutes.  That was my time- 43 minutes!
