What color goes with red and gold?

I bought a new comforter set that is red with gold detail. I want to do some accent pieces around the rest of the room in a different color.  What would be a good color to go with this?  I am terrible with colors, so could use some help! :)

Re: What color goes with red and gold?

  • If you want to go dark, you can do a chocolate brown or black.

You can also do a deeper olive green (dark sage).

You can go with orange hilights, but it can be tricky, it would have to be a particular shade, something more of a terra-cotta color.

  • What color are your walls?

My first thought regarding accent pieces, was to think more about texture than bringing in other colors. Accent pieces that are dark wood, metal (you could go with ORB or golds,) glass could really create a rich, luxurious feeling. I would think about things like apothecary jars with a terrarium, wooden lamps that bring a strong architectural element, antique brass or orb drapery rods etc. If the walls are a neutral, the red already acts as an accent color for the room.

If you want to bring another color, I agree with pp. dark sage might work well.

    Have fun!

  • I agree with PP about using a terra cotta color. Otherwise you could always use a tealish/blue but that would be very difficult as well as it would be a complementary color scheme and I am not sure how the gold would play into it.

I think neutrals are mainly used with bedding like that, chocolate brown is a safe choice.

Black is traditionally used with red and gold. But, for my taste it is too harsh. Personally, I would do cream accessories that incorporate trim in either red or gold to soften the color scheme a bit
