Spring dinner party menu, please critique/add suggestions.

I'm planning a small dinner party for my best friend for her birthday and could use some help with the menu.  It has to be at least partially kid friendly because her little one is a super picky eater, but I'm also not going to cater to her.  I'll make her chicken fingers if it comes down to it :)

Brushetta

Beet and Blue cheese spread with pita

Asparagus leek soup

Roasted half chickens (not sure of the recipe/rub to use, suggestions?)

Grapefruit and Fennel salad

parsnip puree

birthday cake or creme brulee for dessert.

Re: Spring dinner party menu, please critique/add suggestions.

  • IMO... everything sounds yummy on it's own, but I'm not sure they come together as a happy meal...

A grapefruit and fennel salad would be a nice end of a meal (transition from entree to dessert) or a starter. But if it was a starter, I might not do the soup. I'm having a hard time with the idea of serving the grapefruit with the chicken... but that's just a personal opinion.

If feel like I would want one more substantial item for the entree. Maybe an interesting rice/grain dish? Something that is still springing and light. (Or even a spring veggie risotto...)

I love the sound  of the beet and blue cheese spread. One of my favorite salads is a wedge salad at a local restaurant. They use young iceberg lettuce wedges, roasted beets, bacon and blue cheese. It's an amazing combination. (I have been known to have that alone for a light dinner...)

My vote for dessert would be cake! Cake is also pretty kid friendly.

    Good luck.

  • I'm just going to throw this out there as a newbie, and someone who isn't friends with a lot of foodies. You know who your guests are and what their tastes and adventure levels are for trying new things, but the menu seems kind of complicated to me.

I really like trying new things and will eat just about anything, but maybe not that many new things all in one sitting.  If I were a guest it would throw me for a loop a little.

But like I said, you know the people you are inviting, and obviously I'm not one of them, so you probably have a better idea of what to serve them.

  • Can I come?  :). It sounds delicious to me.  How about a creme brulee with berries for dessert?
