Stainless steel countertops

Does anyone have stainless steel countertops, kind of like the commercial kitchen variety?

Since they are required for commercial, I thought they might be pretty good.

Would you do it again?  Pros/cons please.

Re: Stainless steel countertops

  • I've only used them in businesses (I used to work at a deli) and I dislike them. They get dented, scratched. And they show everything. Yes, they look good when they are pristine, but my kitchen is never that clean!
  • The resale of my home would concern me with stainless counter tops.

Also, as pp said.  It will get dented and scratched over time.

  • My ILs have them and they drive me nuts.  They've had them for about 2 or 3 years and they are scratched to sh!t.

They are super easy to clean and stuff - but they look like crap, imo.

And ditto pp who mentioned resale value - SS counters are a very specific style.

  • I had them in an old apartment -- I wouldn't recommend for the reasons that PPs have stated. My guess is that commercial kitchens have them b/c they can withstand commercial grade cleaners and are quick to dry.

  • My BIL builds SS cabinets, counters, etc. as a profession and he likes them but doesn't recommend for most people's homes.  A.) the resale isn't fantastic... not many people are going to want SS counters.  B.) They show flaws and practically highlight them (scratches, dents, fingerprints, etc.)

The only people he recommends them for are people who really only use their kitchen as a show-piece that won't be used much.  And, at that he really encourages them to limit it to just an island ideally.
