washing IKEA flat-woven rug in washing machine?

My husband and I recently sold our home (top-to-bottom reno mentioned in this post: http://tinyurl.com/d37esk5) and are preparing to move. I have an IKEA flat-woven rug that could use a good washing due to toddler crumbs, milk spills, other unmentionables and while the IKEA website says "machine washable" I'm a little trepidatious because I love the rug and wouldn't want it to unravel or be otherwise harmed in the wash. I'm wondering if anyone here has washed their rug in the washing machine and if the results were okay. We have a huge washer that will be able to accommodate the rug no problem but I'm still a bit nervous. Any tips?

Re: washing IKEA flat-woven rug in washing machine?

  • We have this one: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30041018/

We bought specifically for one purpose - it sits on the landing of the stairs to protect the white carpet (who puts white carpet in a family home?!) from our giant dog in the wet northwest. So, it's not meant to look pretty, just to function, and because of that, I've washed it several times. The first time with cold water, delicate cycle, hung to dry. Lately...regular cycle, regular dryer. :)

It's shrunk a bit -  I notice it's not as long as it was. But it comes flawlessly clean, still lays perfectly flat, same texture, etc. Sometimes, the edges curl up a bit until it sits for awhile.

I would say it came out of the cold water wash almost completely original. So, I'd definitely give it a try! I always love it when it first comes out all fresh and clean and new-looking!
