Two tone fireplace wall...good/bad idea?

We recently bought a house and the main color throughout the house is Behr Gobi desert and the kitchen is Behr raffia cream. The family room is right off the kitchen and color is currently gray which I don't love at all.

I am thinking of painting this room Harvest brown which is one shade darker than the Gobi desert and two shades darker than raffia cream. My thought is that if they are all in the same color family the house will have a nice flow...I could be completely wrong with that idea!

Question...the fireplace pops out a bit from the main wall and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to paint that an even darker shade so bring some contrast into the room. I would probably use mississippi mud which is in the same family as the other colors I mentioned.

 TIA!

  • Re: the fireplace, yes I think that would look good.  Here's a similar idea, with different colors:

I feel like I've seen somebody else do something similar with SW Comfort Gray and Oyster Bay, but I can't remember who.

As far as the rest of the house, yes it should flow nicely.  It'll just be a little monochromatic so you'll need to bring in color with accents, textiles, etc.

  • We have a strange bump out in our bedroom. (Actually, we live in a brownstone, and the unit above us had a fireplace in that spot...) We painted it a very different color than our wall color to accent a piece of art we had purchased from a local artist.

imageOur old apt. had a fireplace that bumped out and we painted that red with the rest of the walls a neutral (latte from RH) We loved how it defined the wall.

I think, in your case, using a darker tone would look great!
