What's your go-to method for wallpaper removal

I'm removing the wallpaper from our stairway wall. The top layer was peelable, so it pulled off easily. The bottom layer is STUCK on there.

What's your go to method for the glue layer.  I've heard fabric softener, hot water and a scraper.  I've also had the scorers recommended but wasn't sure if those were only for the top layer.

ETA I was hoping to avoid using a steamer if possible. The last one I used was messy and since the wall is so tall, will be awkward.

  • We used a steamer. Worked like magic.

  • The bottom layer of ours responded well to just hot water in a sprayer.
  • Steam. If you happen to know someone who has one of those standing steamers for their clothes, that is the best. Steam will naturally add moisture under (or behind) the paper. If you cant get your hands on one of those you can also use an iron and the steamer button on that. It covers a lot less space and you'll have to constantly refill the resevoir, but it will work too.
  • I took down a wallpaper border yesterday. Peeling the surface part off was a pain in the a$$ but getting the glue off was easy. I sprayed this, let it sit for a couple of minutes and it came right off, in huge statisfying pieces :-)

sorry, I didnt see this until after i responded.

  • Steamer works really well but also applying hot water with a sponge and use a scraper a little later (let the water penetrate a bit) after.
  • The steamer was the only thing that worked on our wallpaper.
