Fridge with Water Dispenser?

We're buying a new stainless steel fridge (french door, bottom freezer).

Right now, we have a side by side and we never really use the water dispenser feature.

Wondering if we should consider a water dispenser with the new fridge or leave it out. Will we miss it and regret not getting it later?

Pros? Cons?

Re: Fridge with Water Dispenser?

  • Our current fridge doesn't have one and I don't miss the water dispenser feature because we just use a Brita now but I do miss the ice. We have ice trays but it's just not as "easy" as having the dispenser.
  • This is a personal preference thing all the way.

If you have it now and don't use it, you probably won't miss it the next time.

I however live and die by mine.

Pros: The water is purified and doesn't go through the softener like my tap. I drink more water because it's right there. It's fun. It also comes out cold.

Cons: They have a tendency to leak if not installed right. That's all I have for cons! :)

We thought we would use it a ton but we rarely do.

However, I like knowing it's there.

  • we never had one, and I didn't think we needed one on our new fridge, but my husband wanted it and I'm really glad we have it. I LOVE crushed ice, and I use the water through the door quite a bit.
  • We use ours ALL the time.  I love the ice dispenser.

  • We use ours constantly and do NOT miss the Brita. But if you don't use it now, what makes you think you'd use it with a new fridge?
  • We had ours hooked up when we moved in (previous owners never set up the water line to it). About 6 months after we moved in, my sister tried to get ice and nothing happened. Turns out, we didn't use the ice dispenser enough and some part on the back froze and it snapped when it tried to turn to force the ice out. So if you won't be using the ice maker a lot, be careful about that.

  • With a freezer on bottom style, it's an enormous waste of space to get an ice dispenser in the door. You basically give up one entire door of the fridge to essentially a second freezer.

Just water in the door, however, is a great and easy feature. We use ours all day long -- that's the only water any of the three of us drink. But ditto PP -- why would you use it on a new fridge if you don't use it now?

Also -- my freezer automatically makes ice, you just have to open the freezer to access it.

  • If you do t use it then there is no point in paying for a new one. Personally we love ours so it was a must-have fr us.
  • Nope we did a single fridge door and freezer on bottom (ge monogram built-in) no dispenser. On previous fridge I never used it and hated cleaning the tray.
