What color paint with maroon carpeting?

I have maroon carpeting in my bedroom that is there to stay for a while, but I really want to paint the room.  It is currently blue.  I would love to change to a completely different color all together but have no idea what would look good.  The maroon is a pretty typical maroon - like red wine maroon.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What color paint with maroon carpeting?

  • No idea what your style is but I would probably do a light neutral wall and maybe a large rug, either a solid color with texture (in the same family as the wall color) or maybe your could find a big kilim rug that kind of blends with the maroom color.  Our entryway and hall is SW Kilim beige.  I like it.  I would just becareful that you don't get a tan that turns pink next to the maroon carpet. Same thing if you go towards gray. A lot of grays can turn purple against the wrong tone.  At least in my opinion :)
  • I would go for a neutral.
  • My parents have a wine colored area rug in their living room.  The walls are a mustard yellow and it looks good.  The rug is over hard wood and has 8" wood baseboards and wood trim (the house is 100+ years old). I'm not sure what it would look like in a more modern home, but the room is very warm and cozy.
  • We're making light yellow work in our office bedroom.

The whole room is kind of a D&R mess, but it hasn't really made its way to the top of the priority list yet.

  • I would go with a light beige. Putting a significant color on the wall could definitely cause the room to be over saturated with color.
  • beige, I actually see a lot of decorations that are red/beige so I think you could accessorize easily.
  • We have deep red carpet in our Playroom. The walls were dark wood paneling and we painted it Behr Apricot White, it has slight pink undertones and it turned out great. I still can't wait for the day we rip out that carpet out but for now it works.

  • We have the exact color you're describing in our family room.  It was actually in our dining room, too - yuck!  It will eventually be changed out to bamboo or cork, but is staying for now.  Our walls are painted a dark, charcoal gray and I love it.  We have River Rock from Ace.  It's a true charcoal and doesn't look at all purple, even with the carpet.   This is the only picture I could find with the color, since I'm at work.  It was showcasing an awesome Saturday night of racing & martinis, not the wall, but hopefully you can get an idea.  Sorry you can't see the carpet, too.  The 2nd pic shows the carpet (and our adorable cat), but you can't see the wall.

  • I think red wine colors go really, really well with light pink/white color schemes. You should check out California Paints, they have a huge online selection of interior paints.
