Help needed with a potty schedule

We are trying to figure out how best to juggle this situation. We have 2 dogs a 4month old and a 1 1/2 year old-- the older pup will NOT potty in our yard, nor will she potty on a walk if the puppy is with her??! So there is the struggle of who goes where and in what order. We are trying to figure out the best scenario that everyone can follow consistently, any advice would be appreciated. TIA

Re: Help needed with a potty schedule

  • I would try not to change the older dogs routine as that is what she is used too and change could throw her into behavioral problems with the new puppy. I would take the older dog out first, let her do her business where she likes then bring her back inside. I would then take the puppy out and work with her on where you would prefer for her to go potty (if it matters to you, in the yard or not) then praise her like crazy for doing a good job and come back inside. Eventually the two dogs will learn to deal with each other but during the potty training schedule I would take them out separately.

I have two dogs with a years age difference and they are taken out separately to go potty since they think that being outside together means play time and neither one will do their business. Or one will try to go and the other will try playing with them :) It's much easier, and quicker, to take them out separately.

  • The pps advice sounds much better than what I was going to suggest. I'll tell you what I did anyway.
One of our dogs would only do her business in a wooded section down the street. I decided that didn't really work for me, so I decided to re- potty train. I brought her out to the backyard wooded area. If she didn't go, we went back inside. I kept this up until she couldn't hold it anymore & gave in. I think I lucked out because she wouldn't go in the house.
She is still quirky & will only do her business in the woods, but at least she's flexible about the woods she uses.

  • I was actually thinking more on the lines of re-potty training.  I am glad to hear this can work.  The older pups potty quirks are gradually getting worse and we are going to have to nip things in the bud.  We are now noticing she will wait to poop until she gets a SECOND walk in the am!

It is becoming unfair to the puppy who can not wait for the older dog and gets left out while the older dog gets multiple solo walks.

We are keep things as fair and square as possible, while respecting the first dogs place......sighhh.

    Thanks for the help ladies.

  • Good luck. I hope it works out for you.
