Sick Cat!

My cat is very sick, I think. She is about 8 months old.  I came home from work yesterday to 5 clear throw up spots and watched her throw up again after she drank some water (how I knew which cat it was). She wouldn't touch fresh food, she usually comes running and meowing for food when I get home. I watched her as she went in the litter box and she had a wet slimy pink diarrhea (no brown poop content at all, sorry TMI). I rushed her to the vet and they did a fecal and gave her anti naseau and iv fluids. He could not find anything in the fecal and gave me an antibiotic that they gave her last time she threw up a few times and had a small amount of diarrhea (last time it was much less alarming to me). He found a bacteria in the stool that was inconclusive but no parasites. He says he has theories but doesn't really elaborate and doesn't seem overly concerned. I believe this to be a very good vet, btw. He told me to take up the food and only leave water and if she throws up the water, take that away too. She didn't throw up again that I could see but I don't know if she drank anything. She has had at least 2 more episodes of pink slime in the litter box. I was told to bring her back in if the throwing up it diarrhea continued, which it has, and I will take her back in. But, I feel like I'm paying hundreds of dollars for some theories and no real help. I'm so worried about my baby! Does anyone gave an idea of what this could be???

Sorry for typos. I'm on my phone.

Re: Sick Cat!

  • I'm so sorry you are dealing with this.  Poor kitty!

I agree with you that I would be unsatisfied with such a vague non-diagnosis.  I have no idea what it could be, but would be concerned about an obstruction. Did he say what his "theories" were?  I know every time I took a vomiting cat in, my vet prefers to do an x-ray just to rule out an obstruction.

Is there another vet you could take her to?  Even an emergency vet?

  • After I wrote this this morning I fed the cats. Gypsy ate a good bit and drank some water. She did not throw up her food which should be a good sign. She had another pink slime in the litter box. I also gave the first dose of medicine this morning, can't remember the name, starts with an m and ends with a "zole" I think.

I called the vet when the opened at seven and talked to a vet tech, it's a pretty big vet practice but I usually see the same vet. Anyway, I told her that Gypsy had not thrown up that I know of since the she was at the vet and she was able to eat and hold it down this morning. She said to let the medicine work and see how she is tonight when I get home from work. She said it might just be a stomach bug or something similar. I asked if it sounded like it could be a blockage and she said that it didn't sound like one.

  • The medicine they gave you was probably metronidazole which helps to increase gastric emptying without causing vomiting. I agree that it sounds like a stomach bug and the only thing to do for that is let the medicine run its course. I would recommend getting a probiotic to give your cat. The combination of the medicine, which will take the bad bacteria out of the stomach, and the probiotic, which puts good bacteria back in the stomach, will help with the diarrhea issue.

  • Yes, it was metronidazole!

I wanted to update in case anyone reads this again. She was back to her normal crazy self last night and this morning, she can't sit still for longer than 5 minutes at a time, haha. No more throwing up and no more pink slime! I never thought I would be so happy to see a brown poo in the litter box. It looks like it was a bug or a bad can of food that didn't affect my other cat.

My thought was general tummy upset or blockage.  If she gets sick again and they haven't x rayed, do that.  We had this same issue with our cat recently and metronidazole and probiotics have fixed it.  We realized the vet had prescribed some treats for an eye issue that had corn and wheat even though we only feed grain free.  It sounds to me that with two episodes of this she probably has a food sensitivity.  I would switch her to grain free food ASAP.
