Fondant Covered Cupcakes?

Hi ladies! I've made a couple fondant cakes before and am making billiard themed cupcakes for one of my mom's friends. I'm not worried about the design, but the party is on May 11th and she will have to pick up the cupcakes on May 9th because my husband and I are leaving for a Baltic cruise on the 10th. Any tips on keeping the cupcakes as fresh as possible? I know fondant covered cakes can stay fresh for a while on a counter since the fondant seals in the moisture, but is the same true for cupcakes? I just don't want them to dry out before the party.

Anyone have any experience with fondant covered cupcakes?

Thank you!

Re: Fondant Covered Cupcakes?

  • I've never seen a cupcake completely encased in fondant the way some cakes are. I've seen cupcakes with fondant on the top with the paper liners still on, but I don't know how long that keeps them fresh.

Yes, that is what I meant - the tops of the cupcakes covered in fondant. Sorry that wasn't clear!

  • They should stay fresh as long as you have a relatively flat topped cupcake and the fondant goes to the edge. You can always do a very thin "crumb coat" of buttercream and put the fondant on top, if you're not already planning on doing that.

I was planning on a crumb coat, and I'll make sure that the fondant extends all of the way to the liner. Thank you!

  • I originally planned on doing cupcakes before I did the puppy cake and looked into this. From everything I read online it would be fine to do a couple of days in advance. Using a moist batter helps as well. Goodluck, can't wait to see the results!
