Runners with Seasonal Allergies

How are you coping with your allergies?  I'm in NJ and everything is in full bloom due to the warmer temps, and I'm just dying!  I'm have a HM this coming Sunday and I'm dreading being outdoors.  Hopefully the rain that's suppose to be here later this week will wash away some of the pollen!

Re: Runners with Seasonal Allergies

  • I'm dying as well!  This is the worst allergy season I've had in years!  I've even had to use my inhaler for some allergy related tightness.  Andplusalso when I was running this morning the street sweeper came by and kicked up all the dirt and pollen on the ground...I think today is going to be especially miserable.  I'm doing my rain dance for all of us...I need relief!  (Good luck on the HM this weekend!)
  • I have no advice and am suffering as well. I've taken my C25k inside to the treadmill for the past couple months. (Allergies have been bad since Feb in ATL.) I was hikign this weekend and just felt like my head was full of goo the whole time. Blech.

    Good luck with your HM!

  • I do a sinus rinse (I use a Neil Med squeeze bottle with saline solution, same idea as a neti pot), it helps if I do it at least a few times a week.

I have also used Nasonex in the past and it was very helpful.

  • Start taking zyrtec every day.  That's what generally works for me, though last years allergies literally made me so miserable even with the medicine that all I wanted to do was come to work (I work in a lab, and the air is very controlled).
  • Ever since I started using flonase everyday my allergies have been under control. It been wonderful so far this season.

Back when I was taking pilates classes at the gym, I had a really rough day where I got light headed and nearly passed out. The instructor asked if I had taken any allergy medicines that day, to which I replied, "yes, Zyrtec." She warned me not to take it on days that I would be doing aerobic activity because it can raise your blood pressure. I don't know that there's any medical evidence to support that, but I haven't had another episode like that since I stopped taking the Zyrtec. Confused

Sadly, Zyrtec is my go to for allergies so I just suffer through on run days.

I have been suffering here in central cali since the last week of January. I have been taking my zyrtec religiously, stuff tissues into my pockets/bra, and make sure that I either cover my hair or wash it and my face as soon as I'm doen to get rid of the allergens!

I take my zyrtec at night, so it is fully in my system int he am! I have never had issues with it raising my blood pressure, but I don't take the "D" one, that is the one that my dr advised against!

Thanks for that advice! I might have to try that out and see how it works for me!

  • I take zyrtec and flonaise and usually that takes care of things.  This year must be an especially bad allergen year, because i'm STILL dying!

I've never had problems with Zyrtec making me light headed or raising my blood pressure.  Usually I take it in the morning and run in the evening, but on weekends i'll take it right before heading out for a run and i've never had a problem.  Must depend on the person.

  • I've been taking claritin/allegra (zyrtec and benadryl put me to sleep Sad).  That keeps it pretty much under control.  I have also started stuffing my bra with tissues Wink

  • I just started zyrtec this past weekend and I definitely think it's helping!  Allegra and claritin, unfortunately, do nothing for me.  I too was concerned about taking a pill before my race and having my heart jump out of my chest, but i think those with psuedoephedrine make me more jittery.
