Anyone try Insanity?

I used to work out mildly on and off (mainly treadmill, some weights), then I broke my foot about a year ago, and haven't worked out since, and I can tell.  I'm bigger than I've ever been.

I got Insanity from someone, I just finished day 2 yesterday and holy crap it was a workout!

Is it bad/unhealthy to go from completely dormant to something so intense?  I don't want to overdo it.  I found that afterwards I was pretty jittery, I don't think I've ever sweat that much during a workout.  I want to make sure I'm not over-doing it.

There is no way I can devote 6 days to the program, I'm going to shoot for 4 days a week and be satisfied with that - anything is better than what I've been doing over the past year (which is being a couch potato!).

I'm just wondering if anyone else has done this, and can give me any feedback.  Plus, I'm a little concerned about if I over-did it last night, if it's too much for me right away.

Thanks :)

Re: Anyone try Insanity?

  • I've done it before- last summer. I loved it and had amazing results, but you're right- it's intense.

Is your foot completely healed? Is there any risk of reinjury? I ask because Insanity has a LOT of jumping, which could put major stress on a weak foot.

There is definitely no shame in cutting it down from 6 days to 3 or 4- you'll still see results, as long as you are eating enough to fuel your body. Also, don't be afraid to take extra breaks when you need them while you're bringing up your fitness level- you don't have to keep up with those insane people!

    Good luck!

My foot is completely healed, I got clearance from my podiatrist :)

I was happy to see people in the video slowing down or stopping to rest - it definitely made me feel better about the breaks I was taking!  I've never done any sort of exercise that's been so strenous before, but it'll be good for me.

I am not following their meal plan, but I've been wondering if I've been eating enough.  I eat pretty healthy as it is, but I have a tendancy to be a weekend snacker/slacker.  so I figured if I continued to eat the way I normally do I'd be OK, maybe trying to be better on the weekends, but I'm wondering if I shoud change the way I'm eating or how much I'm eating on most days.

I'm big on fruits and veggies.  But I'm also a breakfast/lunch/dinner type eater, and maybe a small snack an hour before bed.  A typical day for me is coffee w/ creamer and a granola bar for breakfast, either a lean cuisine/salad/sandwich with a piece of fruit for lunch, and either a large salad/pasta/chicken (I don't eat red meat) with veggies for dinner.  I'm getting 1800-2000 calories a day on a typical day between that, and the empty calories I get in my drinks (shame on me, I know, it mainly comes from creamer and an occasional lite mocha)

    I do have to wonder...after I get through the 60 days...then what?

Do you track your calories? It sounds like you have an idea of how many you're getting, except maybe in the drinks.

Have you tried My Fitness Pal? That's what I used to lose 18lbs- tracking my calories--including drink calories! You have to make sure you have a good idea of everything you're taking in, especially from drinks because it can add up.

I don't, I've used SparksPeople in the past, maybe I'll start using that again.  One of the hardest things I'm finding right now is just knowing how many calories I should be taking in when doing such a high intensity workout.

  • I love Insanity! I did it last year and had great results.

I did do it 6 days a week, but I really had to scale the intensity back at times because of soreness. I don't think there is anything wrong with doing it just a couple days a week. I plan to start that soon--I just like more variety in my workouts.

I burned between 300 and 600 cal a workout doing it (from my Polar). I did have to eat a bit more on it, but I tried to make them healthy calories.

  • I love the insanity workout and I think you can tailor it to you needs and fitness level pretty well. I have a bodybugg and burn about 300 - 450 calories per workout. About 250 on the recovery workouts.

  • I woiuld suggest signing up for my fitness pal. Put in your goals/ information and it will tell you how many calories you need to eat a day to lose weight. Then, when you exercise, you add those exercise calories to your daily calorie goal.....

Example: If it tells you to eat 1500 a day to lose 1 lb a week, and you burn 500 cals in a workout, you eat 2000 that day.
