spinoff: recommend your dishwasher

thanks for telling me how you feel about your bosch in my previous post.

I heard Bosch's were great, however, I'm not necessarily looking for the quietest. After reading the comments on my last post I realized I just need one that cleans my dishes well. I'm a busy mom of 4 and having to wash dishes before and after going onto the dishwasher seems to be getting on my nerves lately, I have better things to do! lol

Re: spinoff: recommend your dishwasher

  • We have a kenmore elite.  The biggest issue for us is that with only 2 of us, we don't run it that much, so sometimes it starts to smell a bit from the dirty dishes.  We've been attempting to run it at least 2x a week and haven't had that issue at all.

Biggest things we looked for when shopping:
    -buttons on top
-start delay (this was surprisingly not something all dw have)
-space between prongs b/c we have thicker dishes
    -SS interior
-silverware inside the dw, not on the door

Not trying to postjack, but SSM, can you explain what you use this for?  DH and I have always had dishwashers with the delay option, but neither of us have ever used it and I can't figure out why we would ...

Not PPer, but I use this function all the time.  If I am doing laundry, showering or other things that tend to use a lot of hot water I put my dishwasher on delay.  This way I don't have to rely all on the dishwashers own heating, it can use the really hot water and be more efficient.

Also, we will load the machine during the day and have it start at 2am sometimes.  That way you are sure that you have all of the dishes possible for the day and if you get upstairs to bed and you notice a glass you have time to go down and put it in.

We usually run ours at night (I know a lot of people say this is a no-no).  So we'll load it up at 7 and schedule it to start at 10, when we're heading to bed.

It's also from back when if you used water at night, it was cheaper.  I don't know if that's true anymore, but I remember my parents keeping a magnet on the fridge with the different water rates and time of day.

  • Thanks for the explanations, ladies.  I have (seriously) always wondered about this feature and I appreciate your spelling it out for me.  Smile

  • We have a Maytag and I've been happy with it. It isn't the quietest, but it cleans well.

Also, we use the start delay all the time because I don't like to run it when we're not home, and we go to the gym after dinner a few nights a week. If we don't run it right after loading, we'll forget, so we set it to run a couple hours later.

  • We have a Samsung SS Dishwasher and I love it.  The top shelf adjusts for different heights, its super duper quiet, and it does its job.

  • DO NOT get a Frigidaire. We have one, purchased by the previous owners, and it has already had 2 breakdowns in under 2 years. It also leaves crusty bits and water marks if we don't scrupulously rinse the dishes before putting them in.

The repair guy took one look at it the first time and said, "Oh, I don't ever recommend those." Thanks, previous owners!

I have heard Miele are the gold standard in terms of function. They are $1k-$2k though...

  • Another DO NOT get.  I hate my whirlpool quiet partner III.  It's loud, takes forever, and the heating element busted - so it's replace it or be doomed to dishes by hand.

We'll put a BOSCH in our forever house.

  • I was choosing between KitchenAid, Bosch and Miele.  I was going to get the KitchenAid but I've read reviews about the vent being on the side and damaging your cabinet. So it was out. Then there was a sale on Bosch, so I bought Bosch (European model).  Based on reviews, the Bosch European models are the good ones.
