Apparently I didn't get this memo. After 8 years of having an ottoman, I decided I miss my coffee table. I used to have a coffee table that looked like the one Monica has in the show Friends. Big, square, just screams come put your unwanted sh*t here.
I finally decided to go looking for one. I'm finding selections kind of puny. All I'm seeing are these tiny 1960's looking apartment sized tables.
The woman at Haynes furniture tells me the coffee tables are on the way out. What?
I don't care. I'm going to start looking on Craigslist and other furniture stores. Just wanted to see if any of you got the memo. I'm apparently so out of what's "in" for furniture these days.

Buy a square dining table and 24 inches off of each leg? lol.
We don't have a coffee table right now because of the toddler... not so much the bashing into like adhd fears, but if we leave ANYTHING on there for thirty seconds, M would pick it up, spill it, break it, hide it, eat it, etc. So we gave up and put all of our random shiit on top of the book case instead.
Ha! Our coffee table quickly left when LA became mobile as well. Too many close calls. Not worth the stress. Now, I actually love the extra floor space!

I can totally see someone with young kids not having a coffee table. I would do the same.
I'm glad they aren't on the way out though. I think maybe they aren't the uber trendy thing to have.
I've had the hardest time trying to get the balance between functional and trendy in my living room and functional wins. We've abandoned the pretty couch and sit in our recliners instead. The couch has become an ornamental beast that does nothing more than hold my pretty throw pillows.
So anyway, I miss a coffee table. I'm getting one trends be damned. I have Ashley furniture on my list. I love the big square reclaimed wood one Pottery Barn has now but I was told that the wood is very porous and it's really not that practical because it shows rings from cups. Whose brilliant idea was it to make a porous coffee table?
I have two scars on my shin...yes, two! The same shin, about two inches apart from slamming my shin into the coffee table at two different ages/heights.
We have a padded ottoman now, and when we finally get to upgrade our bed we are going with a padded headboard/frame platform.
So I totally get this!
I didn't get that memo.
I have a giant ottoman in my living room and I'm looking for a coffee table for my family room. I considered another ottoman, but thought it would be overkill.
We have a massive coffee table in our livingroom - I never thought of it as a safety hazzard.
Mine is a darker wood with rounded carved legs and a distressed finish on top. I sure hope it doesn't go out fo style. Or maybe it already has. Whatevs...I love it and it is here to stay
I've never had a coffee table as an adult, but it's not a trend thing. I have only had living rooms (no real "den", no family room) and I do my workouts in the living room. It was annoying at my mom's house to have to move it out of the way every time I wanted to work out so I go without.
I guess maybe I was on top of the trend even before it was a trend, then
I love the "industrial" coffee tables that have made their way into the picture.
This one is a contender for our family room
I also love this one, which is not industrial, but I have a thing for metal
