What else am I qualified to do?

Hi I am a social worker (MSW)  who works in a hospital. I have worked in social services since graduating with my BSW in 2000 and I am burned out. I feel so stagnant.  Do you guys have any ideas or has anyone been in the same predicament?

TIA

Re: What else am I qualified to do?

  • can you make a transition to the administrative side of things, like management?

What about teaching? You may be able to start part time at a community college and go from there.

  • I'm an LPC who also works in a hospital. If your area is anything like mine, the hospital is definitely the place to work for the best money in the field, but it sounds like you might be interested in a different area altogether. I would start by looking at the postings in your hospital. Mine is very supportive of moving into other areas and keeping you in the system, so there may be something that stands out to you--corporate ed., patient services, research, billing, management, or anything else.

Of course, the system you are in may be part of the problem as well, so you may want to get out. I just know that my benefits are really good, and I couldn't get the same PTO and retirement anywhere else, so I am motivated to stay in the same system.

On a more general note about burn-out, be sure you are taking care of yourself outside of work, making an effort to exercise, be healthy, and spend time with positive people who bring you joy. Self-care is crucial to people in the human service professions, but is often neglected.

    Good luck!

When people are the most unlovable is usually when they need it the most.

  • Hello, fellow MSW here.  Are you looking to still use your MSW but get out of direct care?

You could try grant-writing or fundraising for a non-profit.  Or working on the advocacy/lobbying side of things.  If you just want a setting change, you could do school social work or early intervention if you like working with children.  Health insurance companies often use MSW's for utilization review.  Your hosp. exp. could help you get a job like that.

If you are looking to get out of the field completely, I know some former social workers who moved to teaching, or the business/insurance field. Public health may also be a natural transition.

  • I have no overwhelming wisdom on similar jobs, although I do know that one of my friends works with a residential care facility and they definitely have social workers that help there. That may be an easier transition as it seems to be related work.

As a side note, have you considered just a change of hospitals? I work with people trying to get disability benefits. I was on major burn out, but luckily two things happened 1) I got selected as an alternate juror on a big trial, so I was out of work for a month. While this is obviously not something you can run out and sign up for, I would certainly say that a long vacation goes a long way. 2) Around that time, management got shuffled around, and it made all the difference in the world. I feel that environment can affect your outlook more than the actual work in and of itself. Anyway, good luck, no matter which way you decide to work it.
