PIP We had a gas leak & our lawn was dug up - questions about landscaping

Since my lawn is pretty much gone (front yard), we have decided that we may not want to just put grass seeds down - we may want to put plants/bushes/mulch down instead.

I have no clue where to start! Do I plant grass seeds down by the street & then start an oval shape of mulch about 5 inches away from that? What would you plant? Any suggestions welcome!

* I want to mulch around the tree too*

Here are some pics (sorry from camera)

  • I'd be worried about soil erosion in the short-term. Do you have any rocks you can shore up the top with?

I would think twice about putting turf grass down by the street. Are you really going to want to haul the lawnmower down there to clip a tiny patch? What about ornamental grasses instead? (Hakone, mondo, carex)

I'd look for inspiration pics first. I know I saw some really gorgeous ones on Fine Gradening. Try googling "front yard makeover" or "lawnless yards" "no-mow gardens" etc. Figure out the site's basics: side, sun, water, soil and then figure out which shrubs and perennials fit those requirements. Either take it to someone to make a plan, or make your own plan. If you do it yourself, plant the shrubs first, then bring in the perennials you like and you play around with them a little onsite.

When you plant a slope be sure to do this: http://www.renegadegardener.com/index.htm?content/171-planting_slope.htm~mainFrame

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
