Kind of random, but the kid stuff made me think of it. I hate that during the ridiculous Ann Romney and whatever-that-pundit's-name-was debacle the issue immediately went from WOMEN and the economy to MOTHERS and the economy.

Woman =/= Mother. Sure, most women are or will likely be mothers at some point, but not all of us are now or will ever be and we count, too.

this is sadly a great point (I say sadly bc I think I am one of the ones who made the leap from woman to mother in that whole mess, I didnt even notice it.) The interests of women are not the same as the interests of mothers.

And of course, women who don't want to be mothers don't count at all. No birth control or abortions for anyone!

It is your party and all, but arent the kids family too (say, a cousin's kid)?  I don't get this argument, but, it is your party so do what you want.  But, be prepared for people nto able to attend.

well, say you invite all of your family and friends to a bachelorette party and it is, I don't know, Chippendale or something. You wouldn't get all butthurt because you invited all family EXCEPT for kids and squawk about them getting excluded. You would recognize that its an inappropriate venue for children and be done with it.

I don't see why showers are any different, I really don't. Its an inappropriate venue for kids.

And yes, I'm really disappointed that my friends wouldn't come for a couple of hours because they couldn't bring their kids. I think that sucks.

Nudie vs baby?  yeah, totally different.  I can get behind this for a wedding shower, but just don't agree for baby showers.  Baby showers aren't really 'off limits', imo, for babies to come to, BUT, as I said, your party, do what you want.  Not everyone can find child care so that is why I said be prepared.  I am not sure why the anger on this.  ::shrugs::

IMO, showers are adult-female parties unless otherwise noted.  i have zero problem with people asking if they can bring their kids, but F*CKING ASK.  it's not that hard.

my issue is, if someone tells you that it's a "no kids event" (be it shower or wedding or whatever) don't act all pissy about it.  i've been married almost 9 years and my cousin STILL acts like a little girl about the fact that we said he couldn't bring his kids.  and then made a scene when my friends who drove 600 miles to come to the wedding brought their 8 month old baby because there was a miscommunication and we didn't have a sitter set up.  "why is that kid allowed but mine isn't?"  (because your kids are bratty runners who like to pull plates off of tables and smear food on rugs, as opposed to the baby who couldn't even walk yet.)

I agree that you can't get pissy about it if someone says no.  If I couldnt find a sitter and was told no, it would be "I am so sorry to miss it, but can't find a sitter for X", not "You thundercunt!!!" Smile

I think we need to have a talk soon.

"I love your mom, but I'm not comfortable being seen in that state by anyone other than the medical staff, the person who made the baby with me, and the person who birthed me."

    Lather, rinse, repeat.

*sniff* I am going to try so hard to not be that MIL.

You all keep me straight if I ever get a DIL..mmkay?

I think its all about the son. I know that's what's really going on here. H needs to man up.  My mom is a TOTAL control freak and can be very overbearing but because her mother was psychotic (as in, threw a christmas ornament at my mom while she was feeding my brother in the hospital - born Dec 17 hence the ornaments - bc my mom wouldnt let her hold him since she was FEEDING HIM) I think she is actually probably a very good MIL relatively.  She gives her opinion nonstop but never invites herself over, never intrudes into family time with SILs family and so on and so forth.  so she has this sense of boundaries (and to be fair, MIL does too, it's just H who doesn't.)

Seriously though ladies thanks. you all are making me feel much better and much less irrational about this.  I just need to sit down and word it all in a way that doesn't make me sound petty. I think we'll do it tonight bc he is going to NJ this weekend so that way he can then discuss the expectations with his mother.

For the record...we didn't call or inform anyone until after babycopz birth (you get smarter after the first one) and it was glorious.

I like this idea...not to keep my ILs away (FIL and SMIL are too wrapped up in their own lives, and MIL thinks the sun rises and sets on J and I because we're the "normal" ones so she'll do whatever we ask) but to keep my parents away.  I love 'em and they're pretty awesome most of the time, but they can be sliiiiightly overbearing since I'm the only one of their three kids that lives in the area.  As a result I get the brunt of their need to parent one of their adult kids, whether I actually "need" parenting or not.

Who knows though...by the time I actually get pregnant and am getting ready to give birth, I may very well go all "I waaaaant myyyyy mommmyyyyyy!".  I hope I don't though...just having J in the delivery room and calling parents after sounds SO much better.

    (gym vents)

Stop using the bathroom stalls as changing rooms.  Sorry you're embarrassed of your body.  I promise I am not going to look at you while you change, but if you don't get out of the bathroom I am going to pee on the floor.

Any little boy who is old enough to ask about my pubic hair is too old for the women's locker room.  If he can tie his own shoes, he can put on his own bathing suit.

You don't get the entire bench.  Because you don't get the entire bench, you might not be able to unload the entire contents of your locker while you put on your bra.

Along this line.  I cross my heart I am not making this up.  Babycopz works in her dad and stepmoms tanning salon ( DON'T get me started on that) and people will PEE IN THE TRASHCAN out of fear of wasting tanning time when in actuality they can stop the tanning bed electronically so you can go to a real bathroom and use a real toilet and still get all your precious minutes.

So, yea.  My daughter cleans up peoples urine on the regular because they are lazy and stupid.

Preach. In Montreal I was pleasantly surprised at 1) how many cyclists there are there, 2) how all the cars there don't aim to run cyclists over, and 3) how cyclists obey traffic laws there, which I think is why I observed #2 happening. I told DH that if cyclists around here obeyed traffic laws like cars did, people here wouldn't hate them so much.

I'm sure kelbrian obeys traffic laws but it does suck that enough cyclists don't and that tends to make people hate all cyclists.

(go ahead, name ONE of the swimmers from the 2002 Olympics - no googling).

Well, that's because there was no swimming in the 2002 Olympics.  2002 was a winter Olympics.

I can name 5 swimmers off the top of my head although I can't recall the last name of one of them.  Dana Somethingerother, made a comeback in 2008, early 40s, took the silver I think?

I haven't read anything about swimming other than this post.

Well, there one swimmer that you KNOW I can name, sbp! :)

Edited because that was a hot mess.

It's kind of awful here because people don't expect cyclists to follow the laws because, well, they just don't often enough. Which means that when I actually stop at lights and signs, cars almost run into me. Because they aren't expecting me to stop. Then, they start yelling at me, saying that I'm in the way. Ugh. It really and truly bothers me how hateful motorists are here toward cyclists no matter what you do. It's one of the reasons why we are starting to look into moving to an area that is more accepting.

I'm also of the mindset that cyclists need to have different rules than motorists, but I know that's pretty unpopular. You just can't really understand it unless you cycle yourself, especially in cities. Stopping at every single sign is really and truly obnoxious and hindering. I wish that we could implement what other countries do - separate lights and rules for cyclists. But, they also have a completely different infrastructure as far as roads, so that would have to be changed as well.

There's no professional swimming circuit.  Gary Hall Jr. tried to create one about a decade ago and it went nowhere.  The only way to make a living at swimming is to be an Olympian and even then, it's not exactly a life-long career (go ahead, name ONE of the swimmers from the 2002 Olympics - no googling).  If she started running and biking, she might be able to parle it into a professional triathlon career with sponsors and whatnot, but usually really good triathletes come from a running or cycling background, not a swimming one.

Isn't there irony there, since the Olympics are defined as being for amateurs?

The only people I know who make a living related to swimming are swimming coaches or people otherwise affiliated with youth competitions.

The only former Olympic swimmer I can name is Johnny Weismuller (I played by the rules and didn't Google, so excuse the spelling), and I only know him because he was Tarzan.

Former Olympians can make a pretty good living if they got a gold in a recent olympics or did something very unusual like Mark Spitz and his 7 golds.  Usually, they work as motivational speakers or they get paid to do meet and greets within the sport.  Gary Hall Jr. was just in Chicago doing a autograph signing and has made a lot of money because he's an insulin dependent diabetic and is a kind of spokes person for that cause.  They also get called up every four years to do the commentary on various high profile meets.  Rowdy Gains, Summer Sanders, and Janet Evans have done this among others.  And then if you're hot, you can pose for playboy.  Like Amanda Beard.

I was thinking the same thing. The time zone difference made it so much harder to pay attention even though I am an Olympics FREAK.

This year, I think I am going to have to shut off the internet while I'm at work so I don't get spoiled on major event results. I'm selfish and I hate when the Olympics don't accommodate Eastern Standard Time. Also, these were the Olympics that New York was in the running for, so I'm still bitter about that too. But of course I will watch.

  • Forgetting the olympics, b/c I can barely remember professional football athletes, and I think I've only watched 1 summer olympics (in Japanese, so that doesn't help)... back to ILs.

I'm still cheesed that we paid for FIL's hotel room at our wedding.  He didn't bother to reserve one, 2 of our friends had to cancel, so we just transferred the reservation to him.  He never even offered money for it.

Now, I like this guy a lot, and I've come to accept that we'll never get a card or gift from him for anything (which is kinda awesome b/c he doesn't expect anything from us), but, seriously, offer to pay for your own damn hotel room.

Our wedding "gift" from him is apparently an old large professional milk shake maker that he took from his mom.  I only know this b/c he told my parents who finally told me.  We're to get it someday.  I've been married over 5 years, although admittedly, we haven't lived in shipping distance.  Not that I want it!
