New here, a question

We just rescued 2 dogs from the SPCA this weekend. Its a mom and puppy, look like dachshund and beagle mixes. Right now they are on the Hill Science food from the shelter but I was wanting to move them to something better. I read a bit on this board and see ToTW recommended a lot. My question is if it matters which "flavor" we get? The mom is thought to be around 2 years old and the puppy around 8 months. I know that I could put the puppy on puppy food but I figured that feeding them the same food that is made for all ages would be ok.

Re: New here, a question

  • What flavor is the food from the shelter? I would probably stick with the same protein of TOTW, and like I'm sure you know, make sure you transition gradually.

Once they're established on the TOTW, it's up to you whether you want to rotate proteins or not. I feed Innova, and we alternate between the red meat and turkey/chicken varieties without a changeover, but some dogs can't handle a hard change.

But I really wanted to say: Congratulations on the new additions and thank you for adopting - especially two! Pictures are a requirement.

  • Congrats & yes, please post pictures. Just another option- I feed my dogs Canidae All Life Stages. They've been eating that since they were little puppies. They seem to do well on it.

  • They are adorable, thanks for rescuing.  I think puppies are not supposed to eat most grain free formulas; I would start with their puppy food and transition to the same as mama at 12 mo.

  • Don't know for sure but I think you could probably feed them both puppy food until the puppy is old enough to eat adult food.  My dog's breeder said it was ok to feed our 2 year old puppy food but he's also on a mostly raw diet too so it may be different.

As for dry, we're feeding him Orijen right now, but I'm going to try out TOTW since the ingredients look pretty similar and it's practically half the price.  If he does well he'll be eating the fish formula since he gets enough beef protein from the raw.  But if I were to feed him all TOTW, I'd probably switch him between one of the red meats and fish because fish is good for their coat.

I dont' think it matters which flavor either, but it probably wouldnt' be a bad idea to change with the same flavor at first as a pp mentioned.

TOTW is an all-life stages food.

That being said, it might be difficult to find right now -- it's manufactured in a plant in South Carolina that has shut down due to salmonella being found in another brand of food that is manufactured there.

If you check our board FAQs (the link is in the green header box on the main board), there is a whole section on good-quality dog foods.

And congrats on your new pups! They're very cute!
