Cat not chewing kibble, then throwing up

I have a cat, and well, he eats faster than I have seen a cat eat.  The, he proceeds to get sick, and throw it up.  I can see that it's not chewed, he is just swallowing it whole.  I'm not sure what to do, do I try to find a larger kibble, so he is forced to chew?  Do I feed him a couple at a time?   (and his teeth are in perfect health, so I know its not hurting him to chew)  He gets fed in the morning, and at night.  He loves his food, and I would hate to change it on him.  Any suggestions?

Re: Cat not chewing kibble, then throwing up

  • What brand food are you feeding your cat? Sassy used to throw up like this a lot. A couple of years ago we put her on a limited ingredient food due to allergies. She stopped throwing up.

Only other suggestion would be to just give him a few kibbles at a time and see if eating slower helps.

  • Slowing down the eating and possibly changing the food to something better may help. It's important to note though, that cats and dogs are not designed to chew. As carnivores they rip and tear. There are no flat grinding surfaces for true chewing.
  • What food are you feeding?

It sounds like your kitty is eating too quickly. I would look into something like this: http://www.petco.com/product/106777/PetSafe-SlimCat-Cat-Food-Dispenser-in-Blue.aspx

  • He is on Taste of the Wild.  Its a relativity new thing for him, so I am pretty sure its not allergies.  I will look for that food dispenser, and try feeding him a little at a time until then.  He doesn't like wet food, we have tried a million of them, and won't touch um.

  • I would spread the kibble on a plate or consider putting something like a golf ball in his food so he has to eat around it.  Feeding wet food in addition to dry can also help with vomiting, totw has good wet food.

  • One of my cats has forever had this problem.  I tried feeding him apart from his brother, I tried petting him while he ate, I tried just putting a little kibble down at a time, I tried putting a lot of kibble down so he wouldn't think the food was gonna disappear... nothing has worked.  Mine is also now on ToTW. I doubt he'd be interested in the dispenser toy at all.  I might try putting something in there that he has to eat around but honestly it's just a part of life around here.
  • My cat did the same thing.  The vet suggested putting something inedible in his bowl to slow him down (so he would have to pick around).  I wadded up some masking tape into little balls (about an inch across) and placed those in his bowl.  No more vomiting, and it's been two months.
  • Quincy had this same problem when he was a puppy.  If I hand-fed him two or three pieces of kibble at a time, he chewed them properly, but when we put a bowl in front of him, he vacuumed it up whole.  I bought a cheap mini muffin pan and put a few pieces of kibble in each one, and that solved the problem.

  • We put my cat's food bowl on top of a bigger dog food bowl (turned upside down).  My FI mom who was a vet recommended it and it has helped!
