NDR: Baby names

Definitely not D&R related, but I'd appreciate some input on our name list that we have so far.  DH and I are still a ways off from having our daughter named.  We will not be sharing her name before her arrival anyway...so we have some time :)

I do have a few "rules" I guess you could say with names:  I do not want a name that will likely result in her going by a nickname.  I want her to be called what we name her.  I also would rather not have a name that is overly popular.  I don't want something weird, but would like to avoid her being 1 of 5 of the same name in her grade.  Reason being, we have a very common last name.

Our (short) name list so far (we have no middle names yet)

Veronica

Iris

Dahlia

Ruby

Cicely

DH loves Iris and Ruby. I don't think I have a favorite just yet.

Thoughts? Other suggestions?

Re: NDR: Baby names

  • Eeek. I have no idea. If you click on theBump, there's a board dedicated to baby names.
  • I like Veronica but people could shorten it to Vera if they really wanted to. Cicely (Is that pronounced like Sicily?) That could be cool.
  • I LOVE Veronica.  It's normal, correctly spelled, and under used (#295 nationally).

Ruby is OK.  I don't like Iris, Dahlia, Cicely, seems like you're trying too hard.

    What about:

    Renee

    Colette

    Tara

    Clarissa

    Tess

    Monica

  • I love Ruby. I have a friend who has a daughter named Ruby and then one named Eisley.

  • Ruby is my daughter's name! We freakin' love it...lol. :)

Be aware though..she still gets a nickname...We have Rubes, RubyCube (Like Rubix Cube but not..haha), Rubio etc. We're silly like that so if you nip it in the bud to start with you're probably safe.

I hate Veronica sorry. All I think is crotechty old lady. Same with Iris.

I like Dahlia and love Cicely.

    Other names we liked:

    Anna

    Amy

    Jean

    Elizabeth (but tons of nicknames)

    Julia

    Elizabeth

    Violet

    Pearl

    Hope

  • Your rules are same as ours!  Here's our list from 2 mos ago:

    Greta

    Scarlett

    Gemma

    Sloane

    Reese

    Colette

  • Also what about Delilah?  I have a friend with a niece named Delilah and she's the cutest thing!

And just because a name has nicknames, doesn't mean you have to use them.  My name is Nicole and have NEVER gone by Nikki.  My parents have always called me Nicole, and that is what I asked to be called.  Don't necessarily toss a name you like a lot just because it has a nickname.  Simply correct people if they call your DD a nickname- "She actually goes by Nicole, thanks!"

  • I know a few Veronicas, and they are all called "Ronnie," which I don't like.  I would knock that off for that reason.  I had Audrey and Chloe on my list, which might also fit your criteria.  Otherwise, she might have to spell Dahlia and Cicely -- not a huge factor, but if it tips you over, and Cicely might also become Cici.  Iris and Ruby seem the best to me.

  • Of the names you listed I love Veronica.  My next favorites are Dahlia and Ruby.

I'm not digging Iris and Cicely sorry.

Of the other names people have suggested I like:

    Colette

    Renee

    Violet

    Scarlett

  • I'm mostly a lurker but had to weigh in because I really like all of your choices! I especially love botanical names, so Dahlia and Iris are my favorites. I also like Daphne if you're looking for more options in that category. Ruby is my next favorite, with Veronica and Cicely at the bottom of my list.

Yes, that is the pronunciation...like Cicely Tyson, the actress.  Thanks for your input!

  • If you don't want child to have nicknames I would stir clear of Veronica (Vicki) or Cicely (Cici maybe).

I think that if you call the child by its full name though, most other people with too even if it is a name with a shortend version.

ETA: Oops! Meant Ronnie for Veronica, not Vicki.

  • I usually just lurk but thought i'd chime in. Maybe you will like some of these, hope they follow your rules.

  • I don't particularly like any of your list :(

Veronica sounds to snotty to me, but I also have never met a veronica in my area, and the only ones I have met have be stuck up pretentious rich b!tches.

Iris and Dahlia and flowers, not children.

Ruby I LOVE, you hear that Dairy you have the one approved name ;)

Cicely, will get mispronounced her entire life.

I like the suggestions of Pearl and Colette and Delilah.

A few of my favorites are Marleigh and Marielle.

  • I vote Ruby!

I don't think it was on your list- just saw it on other responses, but you might like Amelia as well. Or Lucy.

  • Like - Iris, Ruby

    Meh - Veronica

    Dislike - Dahlia

I like the sound of Cicely, but I feel like it's misspelled or I don't like how it looks. Maybe Cecelia?

  • I LOVE Cicily. That was what we were going to name our baby if we had a girl. Alas, we had a boy, but if our next one is a girl, her name will be Cicily

  • My SIl is Dalia and shes awesome!! :-)
  • I love Iris...I haven't heard that name in so long.  I know lots of Rubys so I'd say that's teetering on popular.  I do not like Veronica.

  • If I had a daughter I would name her Ruth, I think that fits with what you are looking for. You can't shorten Ruth but I guess some people may call her Ruthie.
  • Veronica is the only name on the list I like. I know 2, and they both go by their full names.

There is a nickname for everything, but this one is less obvious than Kim for Kimberly.

  • I like these names

    Scarlett
    Gemma
    Ruby
