My pug was attacked today

My pug was attacked today at the dog park. Thank god, there are no injuries. I reported the dog to the park ranger. Should I have done anything else? I left with my dogs. The owner and the other dog didnot leave.

Thanks.

Re: My pug was attacked today

  • This has happened to us.  I think reporting it is he best thing you can do.  I'd avoid that dog in the future.

Did it show warning signs? We normally watch them to see if situations are getting tense and will remove or redirect them if we think there is a potential issue.

  • The jr was barking. The owner said it was his "come play with me bark". Next thing I know, they are under this bench to type thing. Hannah was yelping and the jr was going nuts.

I will be on the look out for this dog again. I just can't believe they acted as though it was no big deal.

  • Are you sure the other dog wasn't just rough housing?  My dog does this a lot but he usually leaves the little dogs alone.  When our neighbor's Dobie is home, he comes over and the two of them go at each other for hours and it looks like they're tackling each other.  My cousins German Shepherd also likes to play rough.
  • Hannah was yelping. If she was not yelping, I would have thought the same thing. I didnot see the whole thing. I just saw the end. He had her by the neck.

  • Poor Hannah!!!!  It's tough because sometimes this stuff happens - have you encountered this dog before?  Does he have a history of this type of behavior?  If not, it could be a one-time thing, mixed signals, bad doggie communication, etc.  If the other dog is like this most of the time, that's another issue.  Assuming Hannah was not actually physically injured, I think you did what you could by reporting it and leaving.  Unfortunately, other owners often don't really know how to react to something like this.

I pretty much stopped going to the city dog parks when it became obvious that my pugs just want to greet and chill with other dogs rather than wrestling/rough playing but other dogs didn't read those cues and constantly harassed them, which just made my guys stressed out.  Instead, we do small play groups/dates with dogs we know, go to pug meet-ups (they tend to have similar play/chill styles), and have a wonderful park outside the city where the dogs and owners are significantly more responsible and well-behaved.  I keep an eagle eye on them for signs of stress, and we leave if necessary.

Thanks Caz! I have never seen the other dog before. I think it was a little meet up for JR owners. Poor Hannah was harrassed yesterday by a chihuahua that was not fixed. I live in a rural area. We only have one dog park for the entire county.

There was almost a physical fight between two owners had the dog park I used to go to because one guy brought his intact dog into the park (not allowed per posted park rules), and the other guy flipped out.  I'm not sure if the intact dog was actually being aggressive/harassing other dogs; I left as soon as they started exchanging words.

What a bummer that you only have one dog park in your area - maybe you can take a little break and then go back and hopefully have a better experience!

I take them to the park almost every day. This is the first time I have ever had a problem. Yesterday the chihuahua was humping Hannah. I will take them again, I just will be on the lookout for jack russell.

  • I'm so sorry.  I'm glad he's ok.  Dexter was attacked once at our dog park.  We called the park office the next day to report it and they said they had been getting a lot of complaints about that particular park lately. So maybe call the park office?

  • Were there hackles raised?

Somebody I know from a class had that problem, also -- only it was her dog that just went nuts out of nowhere.

Good luck; I hope this is resolved peacefully and to everyone's satisfaction.
