Comcast vs DirectTV

I am looking for pros and cons of people who have switched from Comcast to Direct Tv.  I have always had Comcast (tv & internet) and I can't believe how much my bill every month.  I have been happy with the service, Im just trying to find places where I can save some money.

If you do have DirectTV, what do you use for internet?  And how much do you really pay a month?

Re: Comcast vs DirectTV

  • I had DirecTV for many years.  I was satisfied with them for a long time but found the bills would keep rising and they don't work with you AT ALL.  They take break ups really bad, too.  Maybe if they didn't send their ex-customers so many advertisements they would be able to keep decent rates.

  • We left Comcast in Nov and I love DirecTV. Many more channels and it's still cheaper after the 3 month promotion ended. I think we pay about $90 for DirecTV/Internet now and it was $130 with Comcast right before we left.

  • When we owed our condo, we had DirecTv and AT&T for internet. We paid about $70-ish for DirecTv (1 DVR, no HD, 1 reg box) and around $45 for internet (6M/second).

We have Comcast in our rental now, our bill is around $115 and we have 1 DVR/HD box and 1 regular box and very fast internet. Worth every penny.

With DirecTv, if you don't have the HD box, you can't get the OnDemand feature through them. Not sure if that's the same with Comcast but I have missed having free OnDemand movies.

  • Sept will be 2 years since we switched from our local cable company Brighthouse. They were coming out almost every other week "fixing" our cable issues. We met a Directv rep at Sams club labor day weekend and signed right up. Our inital year was $55/mo - that's with 3 HD DVRs with whole home (watch same show in each room that has a DVR box) and one standard box - that was with $10/mo for 10 months since we got my inlaws to switch. Now it's $115/mo until Sept and we decide what to do then.

For internet we use AT&T DSL with no home phone. It was $19.95/mo for the first year - that's total, no extra taxes or anything. And then I had to call after the first 12 months to get the current promo which was $24.95/mo again no extra taxes. They tried to charge us the standard $44.95/mo but were helpful to credit the difference for the month I didn't catch it (auto bill pay). DSL is only 6Mbps download and around 1Mb up but isn't an issue for us at all.

  • I've had DirectTV for years and love them, in our old house we had DirectTV and internet w/Comcast (hate comcast). We moved and we got a bundle thru Verizon for phone/internet/DirectTv - our bill is ~ 110 for all 3 and we have HBO + HD-DVR. I've had DTV for at least 5 years in two houses and the only time my satellite went out was during a blizzard (12 inches of snow on the dish) and it was back by next day.

If you like sports DTV has great specials during tennis and golf championships (US Open etc), multiple channels to view.  We also got NFL Ticket for free last year as part of our incentive package to sign up.

  • We had DirecTV for over 2 years and now have Comcast.  With DirecTV we paid approx. $80/month (never got the temporary promo, even after arguing with them multiple times) for 1 TV (no HD) and 1 regular DVR.  We also paid an additional $40/month for internet through AT&T (no home phone).  Now with Comcast we pay $90/month for 1 HD TV, 1 HD DVR and internet.  That's the price for the first year, then I believe it will go up to $120.  I've been satisfied with the TV side of things.  Our internet is reliable but not super fast.  They blame it on us using our own modem and the layout of our condo, which is kinda ridiculous but whatever.  They suggested we buy (through Amazon, Best Buy, etc) a booster or something but we haven't attempted that yet.  Once the internet is on, it's fine, but sometimes it takes awhile to connect.
  • Direct tv is the way to go. The dvr recordings are awesome especially for couples. I also save money. Direct is about 70/mo comcast was about 110.
  • I don't have DirecTV but I know I'll never go to Comcast. Their customer service is horrible. Good luck!
