WWYD&R do with this Kitchen?

We may have found another house to put an offer in! The last one we put an offer on didn't work out due to cash offer! Really, who keeps 120K cash to offer these days? Not us! It was the quad level house. 120K listed with houses surrounded by 300Ks. Oh well, bygones. So back to house hunting and we find another abandoned house. Still don't know what will happen but we are always hopeful! If things go right this will by our kitchen!! WDYT? How would you improve this?

Here's another view to give you an idea where the kitchen is: (behind the wall with the mirror)

Dining room right next to kitchen. You can see the kitchen cabinet in the right corner.

I love an open floor plan. What would you recommend to make this a better functioning kitchen? I feel the fridge is in the most awkward place! I want to knock that wall off and move the fridge to the

Re: WWYD&R do with this Kitchen?

  • I agree the fridge is in an odd spot but without doing major renovations, I don't think you could move it. If you plan a major reno, I would get the fridge on the back wall, install an island and add the sink to the island to save wall space. I would also mount the microwave above the stove to save counter space.

Small things you could do is to replace that odd light fixture by the sink and take care of the watermelon color on the walls. Unless, of course, you like it and in that case go with it.

  • If it were mine, I would replace the cabinets, replace appliances with stainless steel and paint another color.  And I'd make sure the new fridge doesn't stick out too far.  Oh and I'd replace that light fixture to something else.

  • Short term:

Paint the cabinets all one color - white if it works for you -- and replace the hardware, paint the walls a less... red color, update the appliances, remove the light above the sink and POSSIBLY do something about the counters, depending on how nice they look in person.

    Long term:

I'd rip it all out (minus the floor) and put in new cabinets, counters, appliances and new paint color. My concern on the fridge placement is if that is a load bearing wall that could be removed. If it couldn't, then I'd find a way to make it work. Considering there's vents on the wall in the living room, I'm going to guess it's either load bearing or not removable because there is duct work inside of it. But that is something you'd have to contact someone who knows what they're doing to decide.

This is my short-term as well.

For something more intensive, it should be easy enough for a contractor to move the door over on the back wall.  With that done, you can create an L-shaped kitchen, with moving all the stuff on the little wall to the back wall.

  • I'd probably paint the cabinets and walls for now and replace that random light above the sink.  I'd probably replace the countertop with a laminate in a better color for a few years.

Long term:  that door by the fridge (that appears to be at the bottom of the stairs) is really small.  I'd probably close that off and maybe make a U or L shaped kitchen.  Maybe the fridge wouldn't look so awkward if the opening wasn't there?

Or if you can knock out that wall with the mirror (but unlikely like others have said) you can do cabinets on the dining room side of the door to the outside.  You'd probably have to put the fridge where the dishwasher is and move around some plumbing so it might be more $ than you want to spend if you are gutting the kitchen.

    Great idea!

Oh my. I'd be ripping out whole walls in this place. It's a total tear down/rebuild.

    No way.
