should we attmept to install our own french drain or hire out?

we are getting water in the basement in a small corner along side of our house. we got estimates and the cheapest was $1,200, should we attempt to diy or hire out? dh is fairly handy, I see there are alot of diy videos that we could watch to see how to do it. wdyt?

Keep in mind you will have to disclose and water intrusion that has occured if you ever sell thr home, so a prospective homeowner might want to make sure that a liscensed contractor made the repair instead of a DIY fix. If selling isn't an issue, i think it's fairly manageable with the proper tools.

  • My husband has dug several french drains and he's not handy at all. However, they were out in the yard in wet spots that didn't have any good drainage. They weren't near the house and had no effect on moisture there. But they were fairly easy to dig. Just a lot of hard manual labor. He just dug a trench and laid down this stuff from Lowes. It's piping and it has some kind of foaming around it, so that he didn't have to buy separate gravel.
