Thanks so much for your thoughts about hounds in my post further down on the forum, "If you guys want medium or low energy and good with kids, I'd definitely look at hounds."

I have to admit I don't know a lot about hounds, are there specific breeds of hounds...for instance, is a beagle a hound? Or what other breed names should I look for? I know sometimes I see a rescue post plain "hound" as part of a mix, but is that a breed or a type of breed?

Also, do you know if there are hounds that are less prone to barking? We live in a condo and it's okay for an occasional bark, but someone who barks or bays a lot would be something we'd have to avoid. Thanks for any insight you can share!! I really appreciate the recommendation!

  • It includes beagles, bassetts and then larger breeds like walker treeing and coonhound.  They tend to be lazy and very affectionate and gentle.  For an apartment i would look at a beagle in foster.  Our beagle Bassett is lazy and doesn't bark, but my beagle shepherd does bark and loves to play.  I know people on here recommend greyhounds as lazy apartment dogs as well.
