I posted yesterday whether Rx sunglasses were worth it, and all of you said yes. Just to clarify, I am 100% eyeglass wearer (can no longer wear contacts), and am not a candidate for Lasik ![]()
I went to Lenscrafters yesterday after work to look at frames. I am pretty hard on my regular glasses (currently Chanel frames and have had them for 6 years and they are still holding up well but will need to be replaced in the next few years).
B/c my sight is terrible (I need to get the thinnest lenses possible or they'd be quite heavy). So... to keep in mind that my lens itself is going to cost $410 (and that is with my insurance's 30% off).
The Chanel frames (which I loved) are $238. Thus, total would be $640.
For someone who wears glasses 100% of the time, and thus would need to switch out regular glasses and sunglasses (would carry both at all times I guess??), do you think it is worth it to go with the Chanel frames or find a cheaper pair of frames (knowing that my lens is going to be $410 no matter what frame I choose)? Knowing, I am not going to wear my sunglasses 24/7 like I do with my regular glasses, but will wear them when driving, outside, on vacation knowing I need to switch them out with my regular glasses.
Or, is there an online retailer where I can get my Chanel frames and get my lens done at a cheaper price?
What would you do?
Re: WW(f&b)D- Another Rx sunglass question...
I'm in almost the same position as you, but am going to see if I can get Lasik or have to rule it out. My lenses aren't as much as your's but are close in cost. I now have 3 pairs of sunglasses. 1 cheap pair from Firmoo.com (to take to the beach or out with my niece and nephew), 1 pair of Marc Jacobs, and a pair of Barton Perreira. I paid around $120+ each for the designer frames from sample sales including Gilt plus well over double that for lenses in each. Firmoo had free frames that I had done with polarized lenses in black with a basic black frame for really cheap since basic frames and lenses are free there as is the shipping. They just make them in China.
I've had no problems with either high end pair and actually take better care of them since they are worth so much more because of the lenses. I don't regret upping the budget since I know I'll be wearing these for a few years before I need to swap lenses again. If you can afford the Chanel frame, go for it since you'll probably wear these a lot more than you expect at the moment. Also, if you can afford to spend it do it on a frame that you love and won't regret settling for in the end. It will save you the "what ifs?" and "should haves" keeping you from going back for the ones you love and spending even more. I always carry at least one pair and possibly two if I want something nicer for outdoor events no matter where I am. I have hard, heavy cases that can't be crushed or open on impact if I drop them.
Thanks, I am thinking of getting the Chanel frames. The only issue I see is that my most current prescription is much higher than the ones I am wearing now and the sales agent told me she is worried that I will get a headache.
I am currently a -7.50 and -7.00, and my most current prescription is -8.50 and -7.25, respectively.
I dont think the frame price is bad. Its the lens thats killing you. I have bought 2 pairs of nice sunglasses in the past 2 years and I can say they are totally worth it. I bought frames I really love and it makes me wear them with more confidence. I also treat them better so hopefully they last longer. I say that if you love the chanel frames just get them. How much could you really save on cheaper frames? I told myself that I will ahev the glasses for a while so the daily cost really isnt that much more.
But I have a spending problem.
If you love them, get them. I wear mine year round and only replace them every 2-4 years depending. Really, I probably wouldn't have even got new one if I hadn't lost my old ones and they were about 4 years old. The week that I didn't have them was horrible! If my allergies weren't so bad I may have even worn my contacts and Raybans.
They price doesn't seem too bad. My prescription is much simpler (-1.5 and -1.75) and my lenses were $296 before the 25% discount.
Yes, I think I am going to get the Chanel. The frame $ isn't that expensive, and I think they will last longer than cheaper frames?
If you love them, get them because if you don't like them you won't wear them. This coming from a girl her has a pair of RX sunglasses that are practically brand new because I hate them.
I would lean toward getting the Chanel ones, because like you said you'll keep them for a very long time. My H has Rx sunglasses and LOVES them. He gets so much wear out of them.
Would it be possible to upgrade your lenses in your regular glasses as well so that they match the ones in your sunglasses? Figuring it's a once-every-six-years investment.

I had Lasik in 2005 and at that time my RX was -8.5 in both eyes, so I totally understand about the thickness of your lenses and needing to spend the money for the ultra thin lenses. I'm concerned that you want to keep your old Rx in your regular glasses which you probably wear much longer than you would your sunglasses. Since you seem to upgrade every 5 years can you make the investment to upgrade both regular and sunglasses to your new Rx. I think it will give you a headache going from a lighter prescription and then a stronger one each time you change from outside to inside.
