Backsplash questions again. 3 to be exact. PIP

I'm in the process of painting my kitchen and then putting in a backsplash.

I'm not sure about how to tile the corners.

I have one set of cabinets on the right of my kitchen that are an L and on the opposite side there is a wall and the pantry in the corner.

Would it look better to continue the backsplash on that wall or end it at the same place the cabinets end?

Same question for this area.

These cabinets go up against the wall opening to the dining room.  Should I continue the tile on the adjoining wall or just end it below the cabinets?

H and I can't decide whether we should tile up to the ceiling on the wall with the range hood.  If I tile up to the ceiling on that wall, is it necessary to then tile to the ceiling on the wall that this window is on?  (I have a friend that says no, and that the range wall would be a feature/focal point, but I'm unsure)

If it makes a difference, the backsplash is going to be a 2.5x5 subway tile with a 2.5x10 decorative listello running through it.

Thanks for your input!

  • On the edge walls I would run it out the length of your countertop.  IMO backsplashes are meant to catch 'splashes' from the counter so it makes sense.

Since your cabinets don't run to the ceiling I can't see how it will look good to tile to the ceiling.  I would only tile to just below the range hood.

    My thoughts exactly.

    Well said.

My cabinets are staggered.  Some of them actually do run to the ceiling which is why tiling to the ceiling was brought into question.  The crowns on the corner cabinet hits the ceiling, the pantry crown hits the ceiling and so does the fridge.

  • I kind of disagree with the other posters.

I think that tiling all the way up behind/beside your vent would look great.  That's what we did in our kitchen, and I love the way it looks.   We used slightly different tile than we used in the rest of the backsplash -- it's the same tile, but instead of 3x5's run horizontal (like subway tile), we used 3x3's set sideways (so they're like diamonds instead of squares).  We ran up to the top of our cabinets.  We also have an inset to put bottles of olive oil, etc. on -- we made that more of a showcase as well.  Same tile, but in 1x1's, then we have three large metallic glass tiles in there as well.  Sounds busy, but it's all the exact same tile (except for the metallic glass accents), so it all just looks very uniform, but visually interesting.

We decided not to take the backsplash out on the sides.  We only put it on the back wall, not on the side walls.  The problem with putting it on the side walls is, where do you stop it?  There's no clear way to end the tile without it looking awkward.

  • I might tile up to the flat edge of the hood.  I would NOT take it all the way to the ceiling.  Tape some tiles up there with painter's tape and see how they look.

When I did the backsplash in this kitchen, I was wondering whether to turn the corner as well.  My mom and my contractor both immediately said not to.  Since my mom never has a strong opinion about anything lol, when she was this certain, I followed her advice.  I think it looks good not turning the corner.

I love the tile for your backsplash.  Do you happen to remember the brand or name or where you got it?  We are getting ready to retile our backsplash and that would be perfect!

  • I would not turn the corners with the tile, just leave it on the back wall.

If you tile to the ceiling behind the hood, I think it would look weird if you didn't tile above the cabinets and above the kitchen window too. I love the look of tile running up and around windows and cabinets, but it's a lot more work :). I agree with Tarheels that if you don't tile all the way up to go to the bottom of the hood.

  • Another idea is to look on houzz.com for inspiration and decide which look you prefer.  This might be more of a preference thing vs. a right/wrong way to do it.

It's Rittenhouse Square by Daltile. Comes in a bunch of colors. I did have to special order it from a tile store, but the price was very reasonable.

Thank you so much.  I have hit the tile wall (pun not intended) when it comes to picking it out.

  • Thanks for the input.  I've been looking on houzz, but the problem is there are very few pictures that show corners.  On my butlers pantry, it makes sense to me to only tile below the cabinet, but on the other corner, since the wall opposite it would be tiled, the fact that one side would have tile and the other not, might make me nuts.

That's the same issue I'm having with tiling to the ceiling.  I almost feel like if you do one wall that way, you need to do all walls that way, and I'm having difficulty picturing it, or finding pictures to help me make a better decision.

Very cool! Love the way the tile was done. Hope you don't mind but I think I'll print your picture and take it to our meeting with our builder this weekend. We are picking out our tile backsplash and this is really cool. Classic with the subway tile but unique still.

  • Love your kitchen... Big Smile  I too have black cabinets, I had a terrible time finding just the right backsplash but I finally found just what I wanted...  Now I wait until it gets in..  I am glad you asked this question I will follow this lead.  Are you going to paint your walls before you put up backsplash or just leave it like it is?  I was told to leave mine as is because of the thinset or whatever it is that will be holding the tiles will cover it anyway.  Keep me posted on your kitchen and I will do the same for mine.  Wink

I just painted all the walls except for the walls where the tiles are going...haven't made a decision yet on whether to turn the corners though.
