Light Bulb Question

In some rooms, the color and feel of light a Compact Flourescent Lamp (CFL) light bulb - the type that is more energy efficient, gives off doesn't match the ambiance I'm trying to create. In some rooms, a regular old incandescent bulb looks and feels better to me...just warmer and more cozy.

I like this: http://www.lampsplus.com/products/khaki-10-and-one-quarter-inch-wide-cfl-bronze-ceiling-light__k2833-m0616.html

It comes with two CFL bulbs. But, I'd want to swap them out to incandescent ones to create a warmer glow in the room.

So, my question is: if I buy this lamp that comes with CFLs included, does that mean it cannot take incandescent bulbs at all in its light bulb sockets? Am I stuck with using CFLs?

Re: Light Bulb Question

  • Love the light!! I think as long as they are screw in CFLs you'll be fine. We have some fixtures that use CFLs that have these plugs instead of screwing in so those may not be swappable.
  • I usually lurk on this board but I might be able to help.

You should be good to use an incandescent light bulb.  Check the base of the CFL lamps to ensure that you are buying the correct base.

I, too, dislike the cool white that CFLs often come in.  I try to look for ones with a warmer color temperature (around 3600K) or ones labelled "warm white".

    Love the lamp!

  • I find CFLs with the cover that goes over the spirals look less harsh so maybe try that.  While you probably could go with an incandescent, I'm pretty sure they're being eliminated federally at some point so you can either stock up on them now or gradually make the shift.

  • That website sucks!  They should tell you what type of bulb it takes.  You want a Type A base which = screw in base so you can use any bulb type you want.  Either contact someone at the website or go to a different website like lightinguniverse or lightingdirect.  Both of them will have something that looks like that and they will give the information you are looking for.  I have had good luck with both.

As far as how CFLs vs. incandescent look you just need to buy better CFLs.  You want ones that are in the 2700-3000K range (which is a warm temperature aka.glow).  Sometimes this is called soft white but always look on the back for the temperature rating.  If you're looking for special bulb types you might not be able to find them at a big box store.  You can go to a lighting store, Batteries + (they now sell light bulbs), or order them online.

  • Ditto the others on the temp range. I don't like the harshness of "cheap" CFLs. I buy ones in the warm range and they put off the same type of light as older bulbs.
