has anyone ever reglazed a bathtub?

We are considering having our tub reglazed instead of replaced.

Reglazing seems like it will be about half the price of replacing and having the new one installed. Really there is nothing wrong with the tub per se, other than it's old and the enamel has worn down and cracked in a few places. And it's the wrong color for our visions of the bathroom.

According to the companies I've talked to, it should able to take care of the color and old cracked enamel issue.  Plus it's cheaper and that's one less bathtub that winds up in  a landfill.

However, I don't want to just throw money away on something if it's not really going to last. All the reviews of reglazers I read are from people that have recently had the service. So they all are glowing saying the tubs look like new, but  they can't really tell me about the staying power of the reglaze KWIM?

Any experience here? Has anyone looked into it and decided against it?

Re: has anyone ever reglazed a bathtub?

  • we just decided against it.  We are renovating our bathroom and had a perfectly good, but ugly cast iron tub.  The companies I spoke to only gave a 5 year warranty.  The glazing was more expensive than a new tub (not including installation).  My concern was what happens in 10 years. the cost difference was small now, but would be a lot greater later after the renovation if there is an issue with the refinishing (it is called refinishing, not reglazing)

  • We had our guest tub and master shower stall reglazed a few years ago. We had it professionally done.  It was super smelly (make sure you can air the house out or sleep elsewhere if you have kids).  The guest tub was yellow w/an attached surround and the master shower was green w/an attached surround.

We had them done before DD was born, so I think that means our master shower was done in 2006 and the guest bath tub was done in 2007? They still look perfect. Nice and glossy, easy to clean.

It was expensive but worth it.

  • I have looked into it and we are going to do it this summer. It is $400 here.

  • We did that earlier this year and love the results. We have an old cast iron tub, which we had zero desire to remove but hated the ugly pink color. The reglazing company did an awesome job and it took 6ish hours over two days and cost 500 dollars.  Removal and installation of a new bathtub would have been at least 2-3k.

  • The quote we were given was $425 for professional reglazing. Our tub would be out-of-service for 3 full days and our bathroom (which is the only one we have) would essentially be out of service because of the fumes. Since I'm pregnant and we have a DS and a cat with no place to stay otherwise, we decided against it. If the buyers of our house want a new tub, we'll give them $300 for a new tub or towards reglazing after we move out and before they move in.

  • We just did it last weekend and I am amazed at the change and results. It is really stinky. Even with the windows open all day, the house still stunk that night. DD and I had to be gone the whole time they were working (about 6 hrs). It was 565 per tub including the walls. We have one of those one piece fiberglass units. It was definitely way cheaper than having someone come cut out the old one, cut the wall to put in a new tub, re-do plumbing, not to mention the cost of a new tub.

  • Hmm... Ok I think we are going to go for it. The quotes we got to reglaze range from $400-$600 and we think replacing will cost about $1200 between the tub and and the install. We should be able to have it done before we move in so hopefully by the time we move the fumes wont be too overwhelming.
